Families and Series Differentiae

4

Abstract

This chapter describes families and series differentiae used to classify the soils of Kuwait. The families and series are established using various criteria for mineral soils. The particle-size classes, mineralogy classes, cation-exchange activity classes, soil temperature class, soil depth classes of the control section of soil taxa are used. Particle-size classes (coarse-gypseous, sandy-skeletal, sandy, loamy, coarse-loamy, ne-loamy), Mineralogy classes (hypergypsic, gypsic, carbonatic and mixed), Cation-exchange activity classes (active, semiactive, subactive), Soil temperature class (hyperthermic) and Soil depth class (shallow) and lithic contact is used. The series criteria were used from 12 m depths for the occurrence of sandy, gypsic horizon, sodic (SAR > 13 (mmoles/L)0.5, calcic horizon (01 m), coarse-loamy or ne-loamy, gypsic horizon, coarse-loamy and gypsic horizon, coarse-loamy and calcic horizon, ne-loamy and gypsic horizon on sandstone, sandy, gypsic horizon or petrogypsic horizon, sandy and lithic contact, sandy or coarse-loamy, petrocalcic horizon, and lithic contact (50100 cm).
