The most common trees are:

oak, beech (бук), ash (ясень), elm (вяз)

in Scotland - pine and birch.

Wet woodlands and river-banks are covered by bird cherry (черёмуха обыкновенная) and the rare native black poplar (осокорь), alder ['ɔːldə] (ольха) and willow.

Scots pine and juniper (можжевельник)

grow in the Caledonian forest

(шотландский).

On lowland heaths (пустошь), upland moors (торфяник) and poor soils –

birches, aspen (тополь) and rowan ['rəuən ] (рябина) are found.

Sweet chestnut (каштан съедобный) and sycamore (платан) were introduced by the Romans and during medieval times.

England has a lot of wild flowers:

snowdrops, daffodils, bluebells, primroses (примула),

buttercups (лютик) and cowslips

(первоцвет), foxglove (наперстянка)

On the moors there are several kinds of flowering heathers.
