Vegetation and wildlife in Great Britain

1.Plant life in the British Isles.

2.Animal Life.

England was once almost entirely covered with woodlands - England's natural vegetation.

Today,less than 10 % of the country is forested.

Moorland and heathland occupy about ¼ of the country.

Nowadays woodland covers mainly:

the north and east of Scotland, south-east England and on the Welsh border

Largest forests:

-Sherwood Forest in the Midlands, where Robin Hood and his Merry Men lived

-Epping Forest to the north-east of London

-the New Forest in Hampshire laid-out (разбит,

спланирован) by William the Conqueror as a hunting ground

- Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire.

the natural vegetation of the British Isles is deciduous(лиственный) forest (mostly oak)

Except for northern Scotland, the highest hills of the north and west, the fens and marshes, the seacoast

-The moorlands (местность, поросшая вереском)

have arctic-alpine (арктоальпийская) vegetation.

-in Scotland - moss (мох), heather

(вереск), bilberry (черника)- in the highland area).

- In the lowland zone the most common plant of the moorlands is the common heather.
