The Crude Oil Distillation

The crude oil distillation unit (CDU) is the first processing unit in virtually all petroleum refiners. The CDU distils the incoming crude oil into various fractions of different boiling ranges, each of which are then processed further in the other refinery processing units.

The CDU is often referred to as the atmosphere distillation unit because it operates slightly above atmospheric pressure.

The incoming crude oil is preheated by exchanging heat with some of the hot, distilled fractions and other streams. It is then desalted to remove inorganic salts (primary sodium chloride).

Following the desalter, the crude oil is further heated by exchanging heat with some of the hot, distilled fractions and other streams. It is then heated in a fuel-fired furnace (fired heater) to a temperature of about 398° C and routed into the bottom of a distilled unit.

The fractions removed from the distillation column at various points between the column top and bottom are called sidecuts. Each of the sidecuts (боковые вырезы, боковые разрезы, боковые стволы) (i.e. the kerosene, light gas and heavy gas oil) is cooled by exchanging heat with the incoming crude oil. All of the fractions are sent to intermediate storage tanks before being processed further.

First of all, let me introduce myself, I am Margarita Babak and recently I have been working in PhosAgro as a Chemist-technologist. I hold a B.Sc. degree in Chemical technology from Saint-Petersburg State Institute of Technology (Technical University).

The undergraduate curriculum in chemist-technologist, Saint-Petersburg State Institute of Technology (Technical University), introduced me to a wide variety of subjects in the field of chemist-technologist. Various courses like Physical chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry provided me with a strong footing in Chemical technology.

While offering both depth and breadth across this field, these courses put into perspective the importance and relevance of chemist-technologist and the application of its fundamentals to the problems faced by the real world.

I have completed Saint-Petersburg State Institute of Technology (Technical University) in the year 2025. With my hard work, determination, and commitment to my studies, I have achieved a number of certifications and have undertaken every possible challenge that I came across. Apart from that, I have participated in a number of industrial training programs that have allowed me to sharpen my skills and expand my knowledge base. My student life at Saint-Petersburg State Institute of Technology (Technical University) has prepared me well for my future professional life. It has not only made me a proficient chemist-technologist but also helped me envision for the big. My B.Sc. Thesis title is Synthesis of new conjugated polymers based on thiophene and benzothiadiazide - promising photoactive materials for organic solar cells. This work is concerned with the study of Organic substances and materials in chemical technology. I am much eager to adopt and know new technologies. I am really enthusiastic to attend a Master of Chemical technology at Saint-Petersburg State Institute of Technology (Technical University) in order to understand different Chemical technology concepts and its applications to more complex real life

situations. The good reputation of high quality education standards, an extremely distinguished faculty members, and research facilities are the factors, which have motivated me to apply for my masters studies at Saint-Petersburg State Institute of Technology (Technical University).
