M anufacturers use the term “ Form Fa ctor” to describe a computer’s size and shape. Lapt ps come in 5 different form factors. Desktops co me in 3 different form factors. He re’s a closer look at each.

Net ooks

N etbooks are very s mall, thi , light an d inexpensive laptop computers. They are designed for those who are constantly on the move th erefore their distinguis hing featu re is their ability to wirelessly access the internet. Netb ooks and Ultraportables share many of the same internal compo-

31

nents and their specs are often in distinguishable fro m one another. Unlike all other laptops, n tbooks re ly heavil y on softw are that runs on th e internet instead

of the device itself. Netb oks have reasonable perfor

ance but they are not de-

signed to suppo rt tasks that requir e heavy

duty computation. Before b uying a

netboo k, consu mers should factor in the cost of the

roadband contract that’s

requir d to mak e full use of its cap bilities.

Ultra-p ortable

Laptops

If you

re a freq

ent flier, a road warrior or

an on-the-go student, then ultraportables are the

right kind o f laptop for you. Ultra-porta les are

extremely li ght weigh t (4 pou nds or less), thin (le ss than 20 millimeters) and very compa ct (typi-

cally less than

14″

w ide).

They typical y have

high-powered,

low

vo ltage

processors,

n ear in-

stant-on and instant-resume capabilities,

nd fast

storage, typically via SSDs, all in a sub $1,000

packag e. Ultrabo oks are distinguished from netbooks by offering more pow r in the form of faster processors nd additi onal RAM , as well as better s torage and larger screen sizes. Th se are very capable computers but their size limits the nu mber of features that are usually built-in to other laptops in the same price r ange. Most ultrabooks come wit h a built-in broadband radio that lets y ou access the internet via a cell ph one conn ection. These mac hines are ideally s ited for word processing, emaili ng and web surfing. One feature that sets ultra-portables apart from a ll other laptops is their battery life. Ultra-por table battery life typ cally exce eds 6 hours.

Mi dsize Laptops

Midsize Laptops have screens that are

1 ” to 16” wide (measured diagonally). They

weigh bet een 4.5 and 8

p ounds. Midsized

laptops are designed to appeal to many differ-

en t audienc es and m arkets. They offer a bal-

an ced mix of features, mobilit y and price. That

co mbination makes them the

ost popular lap-

top form fa ctor. They typically have n twork-

ing and sec urity features that make them very

attractive to business. They also have sufficient

power to handle all but th e most d emanding business applicatio ns. Midsize lap-

tops are also ideal for the home use. They ar e easily n tworked and have enough power to suppo rt most of the applications th at family members would be interested i n (i.e. e ail correspondence, web su rfing, household b udgeting, casual gamin g, photo-editing an multi-media prod uction).

32

Large Size Laptops

Large Size Laptop s have s creens that are at least 17” wide. They typically weigh between 6.5 pounds a nd 15 pound s. This cl ss of laptop comp uters is the m ost powerful on the market. Their disting uishing characteris tics inclu de superior performa nce, eas of customization an d lack of mobility. Hardwar e specs

for this type of laptop often include the latest and fastest co mponents on the marke t. Their large size gives them plenty of internal space whi ch can be used to

custo

ize the unit in uni ue ways. It’s com

on for these laptop s to be o tfitted

with m ore than one hard disk, optical drive

and battery. The chassis also pro-

vides

adequate space for a wide assortment

of plugs, ports and cards. All this

flexibility doesn ’t come cheap. Th e cost of

some hi gh-end laptops can easily

exceed

$10,000. Large si e laptops are industrial strength machines that can eas-

ily ha ndle the m ost demanding software app lications on the ma rket. They make great engineering worksta tions and are excellent multimedia, ga ming and graphic arts production machines.

Tablet PC s

Tablet PC s come in a wide variety

of shapes, size s

and weights. Their dis-

tinguis hing features are their color touch

screens and

their mobi ity. Tabl et PCs

come in two different varieties: “slates”

and “convertibl es”. Slates generall y don’t

with built-in keyboards o r

mice.

Conve rtibles

places

where

t he use of keyboa ds and

mice is inconvenient or impossible

(i.e. factories, warehouses, hospitals, stores

and restaurants,

etc.). Slate Tablets are sold as e-book reade rs and entertain-

ment

evices. T heir size and weight make them ideal for vie ing digital con-

tent. They all c ome with some form of wire less com municatio ns built-in. That makes them per fect for logistics t echnician s, designers, medical profes ionals, students or who use on-t he-go net worked a pplications or have a constant need for textbooks.

D ESKTO PS

Tower Models range in size from knee high to te xtbook size units. The big units are known as full si ze towers. The small units are known a s minior micro towers. Towers are vertic ally orie ted and traditionally located on tabletops or floors. Most to wers can also be mounted in furnit re with special ha rdware brackets. Towe s are ava ilable in all price ranges a d have b ecome the most

ame computer in either a to wer or des ktop conf iguration. It’s as

easy t o find an inexpensive tower or desktop as it is to find a n expensive one.

Since performa nce and price go h and in hand, at the low end of the

range,

you’ll find the least capable

machines. At the

Small For m Factor (SFF) Systems

Small For m Factor computer

are very small desktop PCs. They range in

size fr om a shoebox to a paperback book. They are ty pically pl aced either horizontally or vertically on a table to p in close proximity to a video monit or. SFF computers are capable little machin es, but most are no t designed to hand e computatio nally inte nse uses like engi neering a alysis, video editi ng or 3D modeling. They generally have limited raphics p rocessing capability and very little RAM. Some SFFs even lack built-in optical drives. The small s ize of SFF computers limits th ir flexibility. Electronic co mponents are tightly packed within their cases so there’s little or no roo m for future expansion.

SFF comp ters are a perfect match for custom rs who ju st want t o buy a very simple com puter and keep cos ts as low as possible.

There exist several m odifications of the SFF. One variant of the SFF desktop is calle d a “Nett op” that is primarily designed for Internet use. Li ke netboo ks, Nettops use web based software instea d of software installed on the device itself. Another S FF varian t is called a “Cube” compute . These s oebox siz ed units are typically purchased by do-it-yourself computer

enthusiasts so they can de ign or ass emble their own syste m economically. It’s common f or highly customized Cubes to outperform all othe r types of SFF computers. A thir d variant is called a “Mini” . Their distinguishing feature is their extremely small ize. They are usually about the size of a paperback book.

1.A computer that physically is the size of a notebook computer but is designed to function as a stationary unit, like a desktop computer. They save space because of their compact size and are typically somewhat larger than a notebook or laptop computer, both in keyboard and monitor size, but are not designed to be portable. They do not have battery capacity and, while they are portable, cannot be used for mobile computing. The name comes from combining desktop with notebook.

2.A computer with circuitry so small that it can only be seen through a microscope. They can be electronic (where nanolithography is used to create microscopic circuits), biochemical or organic (such as DNA computers), or quantum (such as quantum computers). They deal with materials at a molecular level and hold the promise of creating increasingly smaller and faster computers, an important concept in the realm of pervasive computing.

3.Millimeter-scale self-contained microelectromechanical devices that include sensors, computational ability, bi-directional wireless communications technology and a power supply. As tiny as dust particles, these motes can be spread throughout buildings or into the atmosphere to collect and monitor data. The devices have applications in everything from military to meteorological to medical fields.

4.A term that refers to computer-powered devices or equipment that can be worn by a user, including clothing, watches, glasses, shoes and similar items. These devices can range from providing very specific, limited features like heart rate monitoring and pedometer capabilities to advanced “smart” functions and features similar to those a smartphone or smartwatch offers. These devices can typically enable the wearer to take and view pictures or video, read text messages and emails, respond to voice commands, browse the web and more.

2.Расположите компьютеры в порядке убывания размера – от большого к маленькому.
