The last character in this story is Sarah, who was his lover. At the same time, she was married herself, but agreed to go on a date with a married man.

The main theme is that first a person must decide for himself what he wants, and only then he can make decisions. So, in this story, the man caused pain and disappointment to everyone, because he did not know what he really wanted and was hanging around.

The story is told by the author, who knows much about the fact and characters, but takes no part in the action, the narrator describes the story referring to characters as “she” or “he”, but we see only the husband’s thoughts, questions, feelings. The general tone of this story is ironical, because the husband cheats on his mistress and his wife at the same time and the man goes to all the trouble to set up clandestine meeting, but can’t stop thinking about wife.
