An Intruder

.The text under analysis is a short story “An Intruder” by Nadine Gordimer. It belongs to fiction. The genre is a short story because it has an open ending and finished plot.

.The text belongs to aesthetic sphere of communication. It addresses a wide circle of readers, because a lot of people can find the reflection of their own life in the story.

.The main functions of the text are emotive and expressive, because it has unexpected twist of plot and a lot of emotive description of thoughts and attitudes. It is full of metaphors and similes that both project the inner and outer dimensions of the characters, their surroundings and their actions.

.The type of thinking reflected in the text is figurative, because the text describes the appearance of the character, their thoughts, life and actions.

.The form of the text is written. It is mixed. It has some dialogues between Marie and James. It has a narration with a lot of descriptions. Also, it has monologue, for example, in the end when Marie thinks about an accident.

.The text has 3 episodes. Introduction. The first meeting Marie and James. Climax. His marriage, their flat, pregnancy of Marie. And Denouement. The accident which had happened in their flat.

.Paragraphs are long. Paragraphs are long the main characteristic of the narrative form as long sentences full of descriptions. There are a lot of descriptions the life of James and his wishes. The author uses some stylistic devices, such as simile and metaphors to fill the next with descriptions.

.The number of characters is limited Marie is 3-dimensional character with open character and full of descriptions. James is 2 dimensional, because we don’t understand at all who is he and what his character is. Also, we have Marie’s mother. She is 2 Dennison late character because we don’t know anything about her.

.The literate of the text is realistic and a little bit romantic, because here we have some descriptions of love, preferences in love and so on.

.The author presents in the text is not committed and we see it through the eye of the main character. Everything happens without author’s opinion and we see his attitude towards characters through their descriptions.

.General tone is dramatic, because in the end we understand that James was not the perfect men and had his own dangerous features.

.The leading theme of the text is judging by appearance.

.The symbol of the text is nightclub, where James got drunk and became a completely different person after that.

.The scene is set in nightclubs in the begging, then at the garden of Marie’s mother and in the end on their flat. The scene always changes.

.Flashbacks ???

.The main idea of the text passage is that the character and appearance of a person does not always reflect his real intentions and actions. It can describe like “never judge by appearance”.

.For me this story was quite interesting and I found in this story a lot of problem, that may occur in the modern world. It is important to show patience, fairness and the ability to see people as they really are, and not to estimate them only by their appearance. In this story person looked perfect, but he wasn't really like that.
