I'm analyzing the text «At Dover” by Nigel Balchin. This text is a narrative story with elements of reasoning. The story of Miss Bradley and a gentleman who met by chance in a dining car. The main theme of the story is human relationships. The story demonstrates the gentleman's attitude to Miss Bradley, he characterizes her by appearance, things, speech. The man seemed like a gentleman, because he helped the lady out of politeness by providing her with his luggage worker , but she thought that she could be burden to him(сесть на шею). The narrator is this man . The scene takes place first on the boat , then on the train. The main characters are Miss Bradley and a man. Miss Bradley is a rather large 35-year-old woman with a big red nose and glasses, her face is covered with spots. She looks like an unemployed nurse. The woman is not too confident, does not know French well , is stupid and ugly. Does not belong to high society . A man who is confident, moderately polite, a little shy, belongs to the upper stratum of society. Miss Bradley turned out to be not an ordinary woman, as it turned out, she needed a man only to cover her luggage so that no one would suspect her. She was not at all interesting by nature, she lived in England all the time, the time spent with her was painful. The man was annoyed by everything about this woman, but only out of politeness he helped her. The ending of the story was quite unexpected for me. However, the story did not attract my attention much, because there were no particularly interesting moments in it that would make me think about any things. It seems to me that the story shows not only human relationships, but also the human factor. Any behavior depends on any circumstances.
