One of the most striking structures in the urban planning structure of Moscow was the Ostankino TV Tower, designed in 1960-1967 by architects L.I. Batalov and engineer N.V. Nikitin. It served as the starting point for the formation of a new architectural ensemble that unites the tower itself, the television technical center and the Olympic Radio-Television Complex. This made it possible to create a unique ensemble of architectural monuments, which has become the hallmark of the capital for many years.
The appearance of the TV tower, the high—rise dominant of the entire Ostankino ensemble, resembles a huge spaceship standing at the start. The almost smooth boom of the concrete hull, hiding the steel cables of the structural base, rose to an incredible height for that time. The elegant cone of the base was cut through with large arches. During the development of the project, round porthole windows were added, which made the associations of the architectural image of the tower with the theme of space flights even more obvious.
Nowadays Ostankino television tower has 20 radio and 20 television transmitters. From the tower the signal is received by satellites, which then help to bring news to the whole country. The tower is also one of the most interesting tourist sites in Moscow.
Its different levels of height are equipped with observation platforms. From them you can see the entire Moscow, and even the near suburbs. Some parts of the floor is made of especially shock-resistant glass and that’s why visitors have a feeling of free “floating” in the air. On the seventh level of the tower there is the restaurant named “The Seventh Sky”. Tables of the restaurant stand on the circular platform with glass railings. The platform rotates slowly, and visitors have an additional opportunity to admire the wonderful views of Moscow. Ostankino TV Tower is the only place in Moscow where you can see the true size of the largest city in Europe, with a view that can usually be appreciated only from an airplane. Visitors can admire this panorama from two viewing platforms: a glazed one at an altitude of 337 meters; and an open deck at an altitude of 340 meters.
