In this utterance, Judy talks about the importance of true happiness. So, what does happiness mean? The truth is that to be happy there is no need to do something special. Sometimes we should pay attention to little things that surround us now. We cannot change the past or anticipate the future. Even though if we try to change anything, it will hurt our feelings, because what is done is done. Unfortunately, time flies so fast, that it becomes impossible to plan our happiness. There is only a short period of time that we can rule. The present. It is not too late to change your mind and to think how wonderful the world is. Take your time, put your problems out of your mind or do a virtuous deed just for a couple of minutes. Enjoy this moment and keep yourself cool. Determine what is important to you and catch up. Be free from outside conditions. Be in command of the situation. Have confidence in yourself. There is no need to hurry up because there is a whole world full of beauty. That is why sometimes we should live at a full extent and have a painstaking passion for detail in our life to notice small presents that our life gives to us.
TOPIC 2 «Your leisure»
Leisure is the time when you are not working and can relax and do things that you enjoy. As for me, I have rather interesting weekend. I hate to stay at home and laze about. Most often I go out to the park, cinema or just to have fun with my family or friend. Sometimes I visit my grandparents who lives in the countryside; there we are cooking delicious food, talking about everything and sometimes plays board games. It must be mentioned that my leisure activities also depend on the season of the year. To tell the truth, I prefer summer and spring, because in this time, nature is loveliest. In summer, I usually help them, I dig the garden, do any odd jobs and learn housekeeping. In winter, I prefer to stay home, because I hate heavy snowfall, cold wind and slippery street. Nevertheless winter has some advantages, so I can go out to skiing or ice-skating, I like this so much. In summer, I also spend much time on the beach or near the swimming pool. In summer when I exemption from my exams, I have an opportunity to travel with my parents. Travelling is an essential part of my life. I am very companionable, so I often bored all around me with particulars, it is funny. Despite all the activity, sometimes I want to stay home and only watching any films or serials with some sweet food. I think it helps to relax many people and distract from daily routine. It happens that I cook tasty meals. Sometimes I invite friends to my place and we always try to arrange something interesting. We sing karaoke songs, listen to music or play computer games. When the weather is fine, we often go for a walk. I often clean up the mess everywhere. Well, my life is full of adventures and I have no time to be bored.
TOPIC 3 «Compare the Families of the McBrides and the Pendletons»
Life in the McBrides household is very absorbing. They live in a big old-fashioned brick house. Everything is so comfortable, restful and homelike. It is the perfect house for children to be brought up in. Moreover, as for families, they are so nice. Sallie has a father, mother and grandmother and the sweetest three-year-old baby sister all over curls, and a medium-sized brother and a big, good-looking brother named Jimmie. They have the jolliest times at the table- everybody laughs and jokes. Mr. McBride owns a factory. Sallie’s mother is the most interesting, entertaining, companionable, charming woman in the world; she knows everything. As we can see, their family radiates kindness and naturalness. They are always ready to help others, and are always happy to see everyone. As for the Pendleton family, Julia comes from one of the first families in New York. She is the least entertaining person; she is always bored at everything. She never makes the slightest effort to be amiable. She believes that if you are a Pendleton, that fact alone admits you to heaven without any further examination. Her family represents the high-class society. The Pendletons are naturally conservative inimical to change. They could afford to behave tactlessly and rudely. However, an uncle stood out from the whole family - Mr. Jervis Pendleton. He is a real human being – not a Pendleton at all. He was brought up in a well-known New-York family but was different from them; he appeared to be a very companionable (communicative) person. Master Jervie typifies those wealthy individuals who still have the kind and genuine hearts. He is also presented as someone who is perceived differently in their (Pendleton) family because of his eccentric personality. In general, these families are so different, they can be compared as good and evil. The McBrides are the personification of kindness and friendliness, while the Pendletons are rich, domineering and callous people (not all).
TOPIC 4 «Your working day»
I am very busy on my weekdays. My working day usually begins at 9 in the morning. My studies starts at 12:50 p/m, so I have to get up at 9 to be ready for it. I have a beauty sleep. I always get up myself, after I rush to the bathroom, then I have a nourishing breakfast and go back in my room to put on my clothes, comb my hair and put a little make up. At 10 o’clock grab my bag and rush to railway station to get to the University. At that time the railway are busy and overcrowded by people. Since I am a responsible student, I try not being late for university. Usually I have 4 or 5 lessons a day from 12:50 (twenty-fifty) till 17:50 (seventy-fifty). My university is located at the Baumanckaya metro station, so after classes I run to the tram to catch the train, because there is a busy hours and busy street, time flies so fast. I don’t like to take the underground because it’s very busy too. I usually get home by half past eight, and then I have dinner and sometimes do odd jobs around the flat, such as washing dishes or mopping the floor. Other work I leave for the weekends. I try to do my homework on time, otherwise will have to do everything on the weekend. Usually the tutor don’t ask so much, as a rule it takes me from one to three hours to do it. At the end of my working day, I like to get away from the routine and surfing the Internet, and then I go to bed at midnight.
TOPIC 5 «Winter study»
Winter is a beautiful and magical time of the year, besides it is the season of snowstorms, and of ice, of frozen rivers and ponds, and of slippery street. As for me, I would rather the warm spell of weather, than frosty. In winter, I feel a slight melancholy. When a severe frost sets in - Most often, along with it sets in a heavy snowfall and a violent cutting wind, which chilled you to the bone and from which teeth are clattering with the cold. Sometimes wind drives the snow into snowdrifts. The sky is overcast, pale and grey. The sun shines rarely, its rays are pale, and it sets and rises late. Snow lies everywhere. Snowflakes cover the ground with a white sheet. Nevertheless, think about advantages of this season. Winter is a time of joy, festive mood and fun. You can play with your friends in snowballs, skating on the ice, or skiing in the country, and the sledging, it is my favourite pastime. Many birds flew away to hot countries. In winter, all people are looking forward to the New Year holidays. Watching this fabulous snowfall, you can feel both indescribable joy and mild sadness.
TOPIC 6 «Your favourite fiction character»
There are many interesting hobbies. I like to listen to music, watch different movies, and spend time with my friends. Reading is also my hobby, but I am not the person who can read day and night.
Still there are few books I am ready to read repeatedly. These books were written by different authors in different time. I like Russian classics, “Romeo and Juliette” and “Little Prince”. All these stories look to me so interesting, sad and very realistic. However, my favorite literary hero is little prince.
As for his image: this is a middle-sized and delicate boy. He is very charming. However, he feel lonely and miserable.
I have read this book in my childhood and teen years. My second impression was not positive about it. When I started to discuss this book with my friends, I have understood the real meaning of it. This book and this character showed me that our world is much more interesting than we can see. Also sometimes, we do not pay attention to what is around us. We can look for something nice and beautiful for the whole life and do not pay attention to little things around us. Little prince was so much in love with the rose that I could say it had been a real love.
Now I see how beautiful sunrises and sunsets, flowers and trees, all seasons and spell of weather. I think little prince has taught me and many others to appreciate everything we have. Take your time, put your problems out of your mind or do a virtuous deed just for a couple of minutes.
The author's story is not a child's work at all: an adult can only correctly understand the truth-thoughts of this book. We can say that this work touches on pressing world problems on a large scale. I am sure there are many excellent books and talented writers and I will like reading even more.
TOPIC 7 «My favourite film actor»
Despite the fact that in the modern world we have the opportunity to watch any kind of films, of different genres and different directors, I prefer films with actor Anne Hathaway. It is this actor knows how to get used to the role and shows feelings. As for her appearance, she is middle-aged, she is graceful, neat, slender and of medium height. She is a smiling brown-haired person with silky hair and brown eyes. Ann works a lot on the images of her heroes. Annie is a very good - natured and companionable person. Everyone who knows her says that she is sincere in her relationships with people and is merciful. Moreover, she is very different. She knows how to be different and convincing. It seems that Anne Hathaway does not want to have an established image like some actors, so she tries to alternate dramatic roles with comedic ones, such as a role in a funny action Move get smart. It seems to me that her appearance attracts many, despite this; she is very capable in her career. My favourite films with her is The Devil Wears Prada, Bride wars, Colossal, Interstellar, and the Hustle etc. I think that my opinion will interest you and you will watch movies with this actor.
TOPIC 8 «Every nation has its own customs and traditions»
Every nation has its own customs and traditions. Halloween is famous holiday in the world. Halloween is a combination of holidays. As a night of ghosts and witches, it was started by the Celts. They were people who lived in France and the British Isles hundreds of years ago. The Celts had a holiday called Samhain, which meant, «end of summer». Therefore, Samhain was a festival marking the end of the food-growing season. The Cells believed that slits of the fruits and vegetables, and the ghosts of people, visited the earth on Samhain, which was October 31. The Celts lit huge bonfires on hilltops to scare the ghosts away. Years later, the Celts became Christians. They and other Christians celebrated All-Hallows Day (now called All Saints' Day) on November I. It was a day to remember important Christians who had died. The Celts called the night before Allhallows Even or holy evening. Russia is not famous for Halloween. Our nation has own traditions. This holiday is not appropriate for us. However, we have something that seems like Halloween. It is called carols. People the same as on Halloween go out and collect candy, but Russian people usually sing and dance instead of scare people. It takes place on Christmas.
TOPIC 9 «Is X-mas /New Year/ the most colourful or the most commercialized holiday of the year? (According to your opinion) »
There is no doubt that the New Year is the most colorful holiday of the year. First, it is international holiday. Everyone celebrates on a large scale and everybody is free from the conditions from daily routine. I think that it is immortal holiday, came from ancestors. Every local government tries to decorate the city and make a festival atmosphere. People have excitement, enthusiasm, joy and elation. The shops are very busy before New Year, because everyone wants to buy presents. Different companies know that people buy presents that is why there are a lot of things, which we can find in the shops. Companies know that people ready to spend a lot of money on this. I cannot say that this holiday is the most commercialized, because everyone decides by himself buy these things at this price or not. Yes, there is a lot of supply, but there is a demand too. People buy everything for extra charge because they want it.
TOPIC 10 «Ind.Home.Reading»
My book for home reading is a novel called IT written by Stephen King. During the first semester, I read only two parts of the novel, which is devoted to the actions in the city of Derry, where seven friends lived and investigated the cause of the died of the younger brother of a boy from their company. The plot of the book jumps all the time, and the author writes about how they fought and will fight with an ugly monster, because of which children constantly disappear, and which feeds on children's fears. They have to fight the monster either both in childhood and in adulthood. The first part shows us how cohesion and unity helped them to find out what it is and how to deal with it. They were all-indivisible, and faced failures and fears face to face. They called themselves losers, but they were not. The first part ends with the losers club leaving Derry and forgetting about what happened. The second part begins when twenty-seven years later; they reunite again, because Derry is once again shaken by a wave of horrific dieds. However, only five find the strength to return to Derry and continue the fight. At the same time, each of them faces It again.
TOPIC 11 «Your freshman’s experience and impressions»
During our studies at high school, we are thinking about our future studies at university. It was difficult for me to determine on a new profession. I was sure that I‘d study foreign languages, because I liked and I like them a lot. Therefore, I became a freshman. I remember very well my first day at our faculty. I felt strange emotions for me, everything was new, and everything was interesting. My first month as a freshman was like a big shock. My English level was low and at phonetics classes, I felt uncertainty. Fear came over me, but I put it out of my mind. One of the unexpected news was that our classes start only in the afternoon, so there is an opportunity to beauty sleep. Besides, it was hard for me to understand the material, but I am hard working, and day-by-day, it became easier for me. I met many amiable, companionable, affable people here. I have an excellent group. As to my studies and my hopes, I can say that I am satisfied. I feel that I improved my English and do well in studies; the proof is that now, at the end of the first semester I read original books in English. Of course, I can’t say that it is easy for me, but one year ago, it was just impossible. Throughout all of my experiences and expectations of the university, I guess I have learned a lot. Although I still have many experiences ahead, I feel that I have finally got my mind focused on the right things.
TOPIC 12 «Your idea of the best weekend»
To tell the truth, I always look forward to Friday evening, because it is the eve of the weekend. On this day, I go out from the institute in high spirits, looking forward to rest and entertainment. I try to do all my lessons on this particular day so that I can relax on the weekend. On Saturday morning, I can lie in bed longer and not rush anywhere. When I finally get up, I have a leisurely breakfast, during this I check my social media and surf the Internet. In my dreams, the best weekend should pass so that I would not have to do homework, clean up the mess around the house and do other odd job. I would like to relax and watch movies lying down, or go out to the cinema with friends or parents, go to another city for a walk or visit new exhibitions. Unfortunately, these are just dreams, because every weekend there are some things that can’t be postponed for weekdays. I really like to walk in nature, but it depends of spell of the weather, because in nasty spell of weather this is impossible to do. However, in such beastly and wretched days I would prefer to cook some delicious and nourishing treats for my family and other guests. I am, like most people, also like weekends. These days I can relax and take a break from studying or work. Family members have the opportunity to be together and socialize. Of course, I would like them to last longer.
TOPIC 13 «Internet»
There is no doubt that the Internet is one of the greatest humankind's inventions of the last century. It is fast and easy way to get a lot of valuable information. However, some people believe that the Internet creates many problems. From my point of view, that the Internet brings us more advantages than disadvantages. First, I think that the Internet brings us many benefits. People can have access to the latest news, weather, traffic etc. Another important benefit is that the Internet is a great means of communication. A few years ago, it was rather difficult to imagine that it would be possible to communicate with people from all around the world. Students have the opportunity to speak to the professors from prestigious universities, ask their opinions and extend their range of interests. People have the opportunity to communicate with the people from other countries, find out their customs, traditions and even visit each other. We have the chance to learn more about the world's history, our ancestors and get more knowledge. Most young people spend all their free time surfing the Internet and communicating on social networks. People often forget about real life. Especially teenagers. They even stay up at nights. Moreover, they do not go out. When someone asks them to go out ,they have excuses every season of the year! In winter they say, "Snow is falling! in spring: "There's a thaw! It's slushy and dirty!" in summer: "The heat is oppressive!" and in autumn: "It's drizzling out!!!!" . Besides, they become impertinent, cruel and rude. I am sure there are a huge variety of other activities to take part. It may be go out to the theatre, cinema, any exhibitions etc. To tell you the truth, I would like to say that Internet is a great achievement that has raised civilization to a new stage of development.
TOPIC 14 «Autumn study»
Every season is good in its own way. Every season has pleasant sides to it, but autumn gives us something that is difficult to find in any other season of the year. I especially like early autumn. During this time, the nature is loveliest. Nevertheless, autumn is spell weather of rains and slight melancholy. The weather in this season is so uncertain and changeable. It is a lovely weather for ducks, hazy and wretched. It can be windy, rainy and chilly sometimes. The days become shorter. The sun shines rarely, the sky is overcast and it is raining heavily. Birds fly away to hot countries. At the same time, the leaves turn into magnificent decoration of the ground. In the morning, one can see a thick fog covering everything around, which turns into a drizzling rain. Though it’s getting colder, many people still like autumn weather, because in autumn it is very colorful and atmospheric. However, there is another important event. Famous Indian summer, which autumn is famous for, which comes from ancestors. It comes, according to ancient signs, on the first day of autumn. The melancholy time of autumn has not yet come, and the summer, filled with worries about the harvest, is already over.
TOPIC 15 «People have no climate, only weather »
The weather is so changeable indeed that the English often say that they have no climate but only weather. The English also say that they have three kinds of weather: when it rains in the morning, when it rains in the afternoon or when it rains all day long. The sky always is overcast. The weather in Britain changes very quickly. The weather is so uncertain, because one day it rains, the next day it may be sunny and the next day be cold again. The morning may be warm and the evening may be cool. If you are get caught in the rain, you will get wet through and through. The weather is the favourite topic of conversation in Britain. Sometimes it rains so heavily that they say, "It's raining cats and dogs". We may say that the British climate has three main features: it is mild, humid and changeable. That means that it is never too hot or too cold. Winters are extremely mild. Snow may come but it melts quickly. In winter, the cold is humid cold, not the dry one. The best time of the year in England is the spring and early summer. Then the cold winds, the thick fog, and the heavy rains have all gone, and the sun is warm for the first time. Therefore, it happens because the weather changes more often than in other countries.
TOPIC 16 «Your plans for the becoming winter holidays»
Winter brings us the atmosphere with joy and magic. People decorate their houses and flats, cook tasty food and buy presents for each other. Because the cold and frosty sets in, the temperature goes down, ponds, rivers are frozen and the roads are sometimes covered with slippery ice or deep snow. During this time, I would like go skiing, skating, sledging or tobogganing with my family or friends. I like activity holidays. Unfortunately, because of frosty weather I am chilled to the bone. It seems like all nature has fallen asleep. Especially in winter we have holidays, they begin at the end of December and last for a week. I always look forward to this amazing time of the year, because I do not have to get up early and go to the University. In addition, I have a chance to spend some time with my family and friends. In winter season, I like to go out the country, when soft, white snowflakes are falling thick and lost covering the ground and roofs. Everything seems to be covered into a white blanket. Moreover, it is always nice to stay inside, drinking hot chocolate and enjoying the company of friends and family. What is more, winter is a season of celebrations, and we celebrate New Year and Christmas. These are my favourite holidays of the year. I love winter holidays, because it is great time to relax, see relatives and friends. I feel a little sad when my winter holidays come to the end.
TOPIC 17 «Dwell on the main characters in the novel “Daddy-Long-Legs”
This story is about how an eighteen-year-old orphan named Judy Abbott was allowed to go to college. This book presents quite versatile and interesting personalities.
Judy Abbott – The protagonist. This girl is amiable, intelligent, and companionable which make her attractive. Sometimes she express impertinent to her guardian, but she shows graduate to hem for everything. What I love most about Judy is that she’s always enthusiastic about the events in her life since she left the asylum and hard working and she always tries to reach her goals. She has been longing for a family of her own, but that didn’t stop her from learning things and growing up. I also like how she was so open with Daddy-Long-Legs about her feelings on certain things.
John Smith (Daddy-Long-Legs) – Judy’s guardian. In Judy’s image, he is an old, tall, (and bald) man. He has a considerate character because even though he never visits her and ignored her letters, he cares for her very much. He always keep track of her progress and has everything she needs. Judy receives gifts from him, too. Just like a parent, he also commands (through his secretary) her on certain things and events of her life.
