TOPIC 9 «New Year and X-mas»

New Year’s in Russia is celebrated on December 31 and it is probably the most exciting holiday of the year. Russian New Year’s traditions are quite specific and differ from most of the world because in our country New Years is more popular than Christmas. New Year is the much-awaited celebration for the people of Britain. Many people hold or attend parties in the evening to say goodbye to the old year and to welcome the New Year. The past year is also thoroughly reviewed in the media, including television and newspapers. The custom of exchanging gifts on New Year has become widely popular in Britain. Although this custom of exchanging gifts was originally done at New Year, it is now transferred to Christmas. In England, the children rise early on New Year so that they can make rounds to neighbors and singing songs. The children are given sweets, coins, apples and mince pies for singing. In Britain, the most popular holiday is Christmas, which distinguishes them from other countries. As for me, New Year is the most colorful holiday of the year; there are many reasons for this. I think each family has its own tradition during this day and I want to share some of mine. The most important of them that my whole family with relatives gather at the festive table and celebrate this wonderful holiday. In my household, we usually start getting ready for New Year in advance: we find the best presents, buy lots of food and adorn our flat and house with different garlands and the New Year tree. Sometimes we create our own costumes for New Year party because it is a funny tradition in our family to celebrate the New Year in unusual clothes. Besides we have own family tradition, we celebrate New Year on the dacha, which located out of town and we put our gifts under the fireplace, not the Christmas tree, pack them beautifully, and wait for the chimes to ring to exchange them with each family member. I think this is one of the nicest traditions, because every family member tries to creatively approach this process and make it pleasant for the other. After midnight, we go out to launch fireworks and then go into the house to dance and sing karaoke. In the morning we go to the frozen pound and skate, also sled down the snow hill, it is very fun and interesting, despite any age and any spell of weather. I really enjoy celebrating New Year’s holiday and, to my mind, people look forward to celebrating it with their family.
