TOPIC 8 «Every nation has its own customs and traditions»

There is a great number of exciting events, which take place in every country throughout the year. Traditions play a more important role in the life of the people. I think if we keep up our traditions, we preserve national history and culture. Holidays are especially rich in old traditions. One of them is Halloween. It is a combination of holidays. Samhain was a festival marking the end of the food-growing season. It was a day to remember important Christians who had died. Many of the customs of Samhain were started by the Celts. The second important national holiday is Thanksgiving Day. It has become a tradition with Americans to get together on this day. As a rule, all the members of the family have a great holiday dinner in one house. The Americans, especially children, like this holiday very much because they eat roast turkey, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes and many other tasty things. The next is Christmas traditions, it is time to be with family and it is probably the most exciting day of the year for many Englishmen’s. People in the United Kingdom decorate their homes with wreaths, ornaments and Christmas trees. City streets are filled with coloured lights; the sound of bells and tuneful Christmas carols can be heard everywhere. Christmas is especially family holiday. Next comes Boxing Day. This tradition comes from magi, who invented the art of giving Christmas presents. It’s the day when people give each other presents, which used to come in boxes. It is a very pleasant custom indeed. New Year in England is not as widely observed as Christmas. The most common type of celebration is a New Year party, either a family party or go out to dance. Some people send New Year cards and give presents, but it is not a widespread custom.
