Chapter 2 Systems of BWR Nuclear Power Plants

  1. Plant Auxiliary Systems

  1. Plant Water System

  1. Plant water treatment system

Water which is pumped from a river around the plant is used as the freshwater source. The river water is stored first in a freshwater source tank or in a storage pond inside the plant site, and then stored in a filtered water storage tank after a filtration pretreatment (done in the filtered water unit). A part of this filtered water is stored in a purified water storage tank after treatment by the water purification process. The plant water treatment system consists of the freshwater source tank (or pond), pretreatment unit, filtered water storage tank, water purification unit and purified water storage tank. An outline of the plant water treatment system is shown in Figure 2.11.1.

  1. Make-up water system

The make-up water system consists of the filtered water unit, the make-up water unit (purified) (designated MUWP), and the make-up water system (condensate) (designated MUWC). An outline of the make-up water system is also shown in Figure 2.11.1 and examples of water uses or users are

shown in Table 2.11.1.

  1. Design philosophy

The make-up water system can supply the required water in the quantity and at the quality to satisfy each request during plant operation. Water from the condensate water storage tank is used as much as possible to minimize the use of filtered water and purified water.

  1. Key equipment

The filtered water unit mainly consists of the filtering pump and piping, and the MUWP mainly consists of an MUWP pump and piping. The MUWC mainly consists of the condensate water storage tank, an MUWC pump and piping.

  1. Auxiliary Steam System (House Boiler System)

The auxiliary steam system is independent of the nuclear steam supply system, and its steam is produced by house boilers (oil or electric boilers). This house boiler steam is used for heating of equipment such as concentrators of liquid waste treatment systems, the off-gas pre-heaters, and also used for the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system. It is also used for the turbine gland seal and SJAE operation during the plant

System

Approximate use (ton/y)

Main uses or users

Remarks

Filtered water system

1,500-2,000

Purified water treatment facility

Most of the water is supplied to make-up water system

General service (sea water pump bearing lubrication, etc)

Supply to general service is less than the above

Fire protection system

In case of fire, supply to the actual fire protection system is added

Make-up water system (purified) (MUWP)

1,000-1,500

Condensate water storage tank

Usually intermittent use depending on the user needs

RCW and TCW surge tank

Instrumentation rack

Equipment washing water

Pump seal water

Floor decontamination

Make-up water system (condensate) (MUWC)

Evaporator for grand steam seal system

• Most of the water is recirculated in the plant through treatment systems •MUWP is used to make up the MUWC water

Condenser

Water for regeneration of condensate demineralizer

Back wash water for filter demineralizers of condensate water system and CUW, FPC systems

Seal water of pumps

Steam dryer, steam separator and reactor well

(Note)

  • Approximate use is the value during plant operation.

  • During plant construction, filtered water and purified water are used for construction (max. about 1,000 ton/d).

  • Approximate use changes depending on site conditions, such as plant power and system capacity of uses or users.
