M/S: Sequential Manual

A/L : Automation by Logic Control

OG : Operation Guidance

  1. Remote shutdown system (rss)

The RSS is installed at a location sufficiently distant from the MCR. The RSS is used to safely bring the reactor from hot to cold conditions after a scram in case use of the MCR is impossible. Regardless of the status in the MCR, the RSS becomes independently operable by turning the change over switch mounted on the RSS panel to the RSS position. The RSS includes monitoring and control systems of the safety relief valves (SRVs), the reactor core isolation cooling system (RCIC) and the residual heat removal system (RHR), and communication systems that enable internal and external communications with the personnel at needed places.

  1. Emergency operational facilities

After the TMI accident, there was a trend in the USA and other countries to strengthen emergency management in nuclear power plants. One of the main causes of aggravation of the TMI accident is that much time was taken to understand reactor conditions which led to confusion among the operating personnel in the MCR. In Japan, emergency operational facilities have been established to support the MCR personnel from outside when an accident occurs.

The functions of the emergency operational facilities are as follows.

  1. To establish circumstances for the MCR operating personnel to concentrate on abnormal
