  1. Reactor neutron monitoring system (nms)

The reactor NMS is designed in accordance with the following basic design principles.

  1. The NMS is capable of monitoring neutron flux or reactor power over the entire range from a reactor shutdown state to 125% of rated power. This entire range typically consists of three monitoring ranges, i.e. the source range, intermediate range and power range; while two monitoring ranges (i.e. the startup range and power range) compose the entire range in a plant which employs the startup range neutron monitor (SRNM) since the SRNM covers both the source range and intermediate range. Sufficient overlaps of measurements are provided between these monitoring ranges so that a shift from one range to another will not cause discontinuity of measurements.

  2. The NMS detects any occurrence of excessive reactor power that could cause damage to the fuel cladding. If such power is detected,
