Chapter 2 Systems of BWR Nuclear Power Plants

Figure 2.4.10 Main steam line piping

  1. Turbine System

  1. System Summary

In a BWR turbine system, steam generated in the reactor is directly used to drive the steam turbine. The turbine exhaust steam is condensed in the condenser and the condensate is sent back to the reactor.

An example of a turbine system is shown in Figure 2.5.1.

The steam generated in the reactor passes through the main steam line and enters the high pressure turbine via a main steam stop valve and a steam control valve. The exhaust steam from the high pressure turbine enters the low pressure turbine via a moisture separator, cross around pipes, an intermediate stop valve and an intercept valve, and it is discharged to the condenser.

Latest plants adopt a moisture separator re-heater instead of the moisture separator.

Condensate, which is condensed by exchanging heat with sea water in the condenser, passes through the condensate filter and demineralizer, the

steam jet air ejector (SJAE) intermediate cooler, and the turbine gland steam condenser after being pressurized by the low pressure condensate pumps (LPCPs). After being treated to acquire chemical qualities sufficient for use as the reactor feed water, the condensate is pressurized by the high pressure condensate pumps (HPCPs), and enters the reactor feed water pumps (RFPs) after the temperature is increased by the low pressure feed water heaters. Then, after being further pressurized by the RFPs condensate is sent to the reactor via the high pressure feed water heaters. In the feed water heater, the condensate or the feed water is heated by the turbine extraction steam. Condensed drain of the extraction steam passes through the lower stage of the feed water heaters and returns to the condenser.

The ABWR adopts a drain pump up system which directly collects the drain of the feed water heaters into the condensate system. The drain of the high pressure feed water heaters is collected into the upper stream of the feed water pumps, and the drain of the low pressure feed water heaters is collected into the upper stream of the condensate
