I consider the best profession to be that of a philosopher. This is because the main purposes of professions revolve around accumulating capital, supporting a family—since every healthy person should have a family—advancing in one’s career, and fulfilling various other social functions that should be inherent in any normal individual. The profession of a philosopher is wonderful in that, essentially, any philosopher finds satisfaction in a different meaning. Some stop at asceticism, making them indifferent to what many consider joyful in daily trips to the store or buying something that should bring them happiness. Others remain nihilists, thus dismantling all the social principles that any normal person should have. Some choose to turn to religion and dedicate their life, love, and thoughts to God. Others develop theories of new movements that will linger in the minds of people for centuries to come, as they engage with philosophy in one way or another. Some turn to science, as no science can exist without philosophy. In one way or another, they are all united by one thing: a complete dedication to their thinking and understanding of the world around them. This is what I would call the ideal profession—dedicating oneself to thinking and making sense of the world around us.
