What is plagiarism?
Look at your handout and read the 3 versions of the original text.student handout
Which one is NOT plagiarised?

Avoiding Plagiarism
ANSWERS
•Version 1 paraphrases and summarises the main points and is not plagiarism. It cites the author.
•Version 2 cites the author and uses speech marks to show that it is a quote. This is not plagiarism.
•Version 3 uses the same words in a different order. This is plagiarism even though it is referenced.

How to avoid plagiarism
•Paraphrase
•Quote
•Use correct referencing ***

Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing
The original text has to change dramatically to become a paraphrase – just changing vocabulary is not enough!
