There are a number of different techniques which can be used to paraphrase. It is important to use more than 1 or 2 of these techniques when you are paraphrasing.
Use synonyms
According to Bailey, plagiarism is common amongst students,

Change word order
Thinking about the ideas in the sentence rather than the words, and interpreting them can help to reduce plagiarism.

Change sentence from negative to positive (or positive to negative)
She failed her exams.
She did not pass her exams.
Use alternative linking words
Although he changed some of the words, his lecturer said that it was plagiarism..

Change active- passive
Turnitin found no evidence of plagiarism.

Change phrase - clause
Citing references is essential. Citing references shows that you have done research and also that you are not passing off someone else’s work as your own,

One common cause of plagiarism is because students do not take notes correctly from the sources and fail to interpret the ideas. This is especially true when writing an essay which you have left to the last minute!
A good way to avoid this is to mark clearly which your notes are and which is original material and also to make sure that you put in references as you are writing. This avoids the problem of losing the references when you come to the end of your assignment!
Possible answer
Plagiarism can occur due to students’ poor note taking abilities, and failure to understanding the ideas fully, particularly when an essay has an imminent deadline.
One suggestion to prevent this is by marking the original text carefully, and to check that references are added at the same time as writing to save time at the end of the assignment.
