C onditional link words

Unless / as long as / supposing / providing

Unless = if + not

Eg. Unless you work hard, you won’t pass the exam

You’ll lose the language unless you practise

As long as / Provided (that) / Providing = on condition that

Eg. You’ll be fine as long as you tell the truth

I’ll help you provided you do the same for me

Providing you tell the truth, nothing bad will happen

Supposing = imagine

Eg. Supposing / imagine you won the lottery, what would you do?

Supposing you could be anyone in the world for one day, who would you be?

A) Rewrite the sentences using either Provided, Providing or Unless

  1. If you don’t tell the truth you will be punished.

____________________________________________________

  1. If you tell the truth, you won’t be punished.

____________________________________________________

  1. If you complete the work on time, you will be paid in full.

____________________________________________________

  1. If you do not complete the work on time you will not be paid.

____________________________________________________

  1. I’ll meet you at 5 if I finish work on time.

  1. We’ll go to the beach on Sunday if it doesn’t rain.

B) Expand the notes using Suppose, Supposing or Imagine

Example

(miss / last train) Supposing we missed the last train, how would we get home?

  1. (lost/ all money) ___________________________, how would it change your life?

  1. (travel/ anywhere in the world/ whole year) _____________

__________________________________, where would you go?

  1. (company/ go bankrupt) _______________________________, how do you think you would react?

  1. (lose/ passport) _______________________________, how would you get back home?

  1. (lower/ price) ____________________________, would you buy the house?

ANSWERS

  1. Unless you tell the truth, you will be punished.

  2. Providing / Provided you tell the truth, you won’t be punished

or You won’t be punished providing/ed you tell the truth.

  1. Providing/ed you finish the work on time, you will be paid in full

or You will be paid in full providing/ed you finish the work on time.

  1. You will not be paid unless you finish the work on time.

  2. Providing/ed I finish work on time, I’ll meet you at 5.

or I’ll meet you at 5 providing/ed I finish work on time.

  1. Providing/ed it doesn’t rain, we’ll go to the beach on Sunday

Or We’ll go to the beach on Sunday providing/ed it doesn’t rain.

Or we’ll go to the beach on Sunday unless it rains.

B)
