•Copying another student’s work
•Handing in your own work to another class
•Copying or summarising another person’s work or ideas without giving them credit

1.Plagiarism

Why using citations is important
•Gives credit to the authors
•Lends credibility to your work and shows you have done research
•Allows your readers to find the original source and check your supporting evidence

Turnitin

Paraphrasing
•Rewriting the ideas of another in your own words
•The original text has to change dramatically to become a paraphrase
– just changing vocabulary is not enough!
•Paraphrase usually around same length as original

How to Paraphrase
Use a combination of these methods
•Change vocab – use synonyms
•Change word forms
•Change word order
•Change positive to negative
•Use different linking words
•Change active to passive
•Change phrases to clause
•Join or separate sentences
