Supporting discussion: Loyalty and obedience are often considered as key factors in choosing a pet, as owners are looking for an animal that can be relied on to do as it is told. Because dogs can be taught to be obedient, they can also play useful roles in the house such as being a guard dog.

2. Topic sentence: Dogs do not cost a large amount of money to maintain

Supporting discussion: In relative terms, the cost of keeping a medium sized dog is similar to keeping a cat. However, in terms of value for money, a dog gives a higher rate of return.
