Example argument essay with analysis questions

One conspicuous and growing trend in business is the constant inflow of people from other countries and the formation of a multicultural environment. With this trend, the domestic companies would have to confront a range of problems that arise from the management of a multicultural workforce. Even though there is an opinion that dealing with these problems can be done only by providing English language courses to overseas workers, there is some evidence that the management of these problems require a more complicated approach. It is believed that a range of approaches are required to overcome such issues regarding managing multicultural work groups. This essay will argue why simply providing language courses is insufficient.

The first reason why merely offering overseas employees language courses is not enough is because promoting respect for other cultures is also necessary. At times, not respecting other people’s cultures or beliefs can lead to conflict and even discrimination. This discrimination of different races in a company is seen as a serious problem for managers. In fact, in Australia for instance, this is illegal under anti-discrimination laws in each state and territory (Brown, 2009; Smith, 2008). Therefore, it is important that managers are trained adequately and are aware of not only different cultural customs but also how to promote respect in the workplace. Karpin, for instance, indicates that “there is a need for Australian industries to develop mangers to be competent in managing a multicultural workforce and to promote the values of anti-racism, tolerance and equity” (as cited in Farewell, 2008, p. 63). The simple provision of English courses to foreign staff will not be adequate to achieve this in the workplace.

Additionally, education for staff regarding the culture and the customs followed in the host country, as opposed to merely providing language instruction, may also be required. This is. It is reported that, in some cases, having employees from different regions of the world working together may lead to some misunderstanding due to the different norms and values that they have (Goodes, cited in Farewell, 2008 p.63). Some of these, although acceptable in certain cultures, may in fact be unreasonable or even an offence at the workplace in a new environment (Farewell, 2008, p.62). Without this cultural education, employees from different backgrounds may feel that they have not received adequate support from their employer. Hicks (as cited in Farewell 2008, p.62) supports this argument by stating that staff may not automatically show greater commitment to the company unless the inititiatives in managing cultural diversity are interpreted as being supportive. Consequently, managers need to develop a climate of inclusiveness through on-going education.

It is true that providing English lessons may assist in reducing cultural problems in the business environment. Because language is a part of culture, by studying a language, employees may also acquire cultural knowledge to some extent. However, like most issues in business and management, one solution is insufficient. Simply learning a language might not ensure individuals are aware of certain cultural norms. Nor will it encourage workers from the host country to be open minded and accepting of the values and customs of their ‘new’ colleague. A further argument is that for certain professions, having a high level English ability may not always be a requirement. As managing a multi-cultural group is a complicated task, it is clear that only one response will be inadequate.
