What we do here

Students

We understand that university study can present new challenges in the form of writing essays, grammar, giving class presentation, managing your time and preparing for exams. The Student Learning Support team offers help in one-on-one sessions and small group workshops or seminars to improve your skills in:

  • Writing skills

  • Citing and referencing

  • Grammar

  • Oral presentations

  • Reading more effectively

  • Managing time, study strategies

  • Preparing for exams

  • Working in teams

Our aim

The aim of Student Learning Support is to help you improve your English and academic skills. We are not a proof reading service - our goal is to help you learn from your mistakes and become more self-sufficient with your English. We often do this by going through parts of your essays for you and often we will not be able to look over all of your assignment. Just fixing your essays would only help you for one assignment; it does not help you for your future career of life.

Because we provide a free service to the great number of university students who need help, we are only able to offer one 30 minute appointment per student per week in order to maximise the number of people that we see.

Take the best advantage you can of our service by learning from the errors we show you and consciously trying not to make the same ones in the future. Please ask for our help and advice and work at improving your language knowledge and academic skills. In that way, we can help you for your future, not just for one assignment.

Staff

Student Learning Support also offers seminars and advice to academic and general staff. Learning advisors are available to consult with supervisors, course coordinators and lecturers to help improve the overall study experience for students. This includes reviewing iLearn sites, assessment and course materials, and offering suggestions on how to make items clearer. Learning advisors also work with staff to embed English and academic skills into their curricula.
