Monologue on ENGINEERING
You are going to give a talk about ENGINEERING. |
The text of the monologue |
Vocabulary, Grammar Structures, Linking Words and Phrases |
Step 1. Introduction 1. Start with a hook sentence that will attract the listener’s attention (a quote, a proverb, etc.). 2. Lead your speech steadily to the main part of your talk. 3. The introduction may consist of 3-6 sentences. |
G. L. Clegg once said, that a scientist can discover a new star but he cannot make one. He would have to ask an engineer to do it for him. Engineering is the backbone of innovation and progress in our modern world. It encompasses a vast spectrum of disciplines, from mechanical and civil engineering to electrical and computer engineering, all dedicated to solving problems and shaping the future of technology and infrastructure. |
|
Step 2. From Engines to Engineers 1. Speak about engineers’ contribution to society focusing on types of engineering and what each type is concerned with. 2. Speak about one of the greatest engineering achievements. How has it improved people’s lives? |
To begin with, engineers make invaluable contributions to society through various types of engineering, each with its own unique focus. Mechanical engineers, for instance, work to design new products and technologies, from cutting-edge consumer gadgets to efficient transportation systems. Electrical and computer engineers play a pivotal role in creating advanced technologies that power our digital age. Additionally, they work in research laboratories to solve problems. Biomedical engineers contribute significantly by developing new medicines and medical devices. Their efforts in research and development lead to innovative medical technologies, putting theory into practice. Aerospace engineers, on the other hand, explore new worlds beyond our planet. They design spacecraft and launch vehicles. After all, engineers across various disciplines work diligently to solve problems, create advanced technologies, prevent pollution, and find new uses for old products. Another significant engineering achievement is the Internet. It has revolutionized global communication, provided easy access to information, created economic opportunities, fostered innovation, enriched entertainment, and transformed education, greatly improving people's lives. |

Step 3. Survival Engineering 1. Speak about the most hazardous global threats the humanity may face. 2. Speak about engineering ways to prevent disasters the threats may cause.
|
Some of the most hazardous global threats humanity may face include climate change, nuclear weapons, pandemics, terrorism, AI and biotechnology risks, and global economic crises. Certainly, engineers employ various strategies to prevent disasters resulting from global threats. They begin by assessing the feasibility of the project to determine if the proposed solution is practical given. To better understand, engineers build models that simulate system behavior. As a matter of fact, engineers develop mathematical models to make predictions about behavior of these threats. Before implementing large-scale projects, engineers do safety tests. They use high-powered instruments, such as sensors and monitoring devices, to collect critical data about environmental conditions. Once a solution is proven effective, engineers move forward to implement an engineering project. Engineers continuously test theories and refine them. In summary, engineers employ these methods and tools: using modeling, making a full-size version, testing and data-driven analysis to prevent disasters. |

Step 4. Superstructures 1. Speak about the largest man-made structure you’ve heard of or been to. Specify its size and function. 2. Would you agree/disagree that spending money on building superstructures can be justified.
|
One of the most astonishing man-made structures is the Three Gorges Dam in China. This engineering marvel is truly at the cutting edge of modern technology and innovation. The Three Gorges Dam is 185 meters high, making it one of the tallest dams globally, and it covers 1,084 square kilometers. Its primary function is to generate hydroelectric power. In its construction, the project implemented state-of-the-art techniques. The dam also incorporates the latest technologies to optimize power generation and water management, keeping up to date with modern technologies. Additionally, it has contributed to solving climate change problems by reducing China's reliance on fossil fuels for electricity. This massive infrastructure project has given China a profound sense of pride, representing its technological and engineering prowess on the global stage. Moreover, it has stimulated the country's economic growth by providing clean and reliable energy. The justification for spending money on building superstructures depends on the context. In many cases, such projects can have significant benefits, such as improving infrastructure, stimulating economic growth, and enhancing a nation's prestige. However, the allocation of funds should always be weighed against competing priorities and the needs of society to ensure responsible and beneficial investments. But for the most part, I agree that superstructures are a justifiable waste of money.
