29. Fill in the blanks with 'must', 'to have', 'to be'. Pay attention to whether the action is only necessary or necessary and expected:

30. Translate into English:

1. Хто повинен вас зустрічати? 2. Де ви повинні були зустрітися? 3. Вони були змушені викликати пожежників, щоб зняти його з даху. 4. Ви будете змушені взяти таксі. Вже пізно. 5. Мені треба купити хліба і масла по дорозі додому. 6. Він повинен був купити молоко вранці. Сьогодні була його черга. 7. Хто сьогодні повинен робити доповідь з домашнього читання? 8. Питання щодо того, де цуценяті спати, довго обговорювалося. 9. В цьому році я повинен закінчити школу. 10. Хтось повинен був їй сказати, що ми не зрозуміли завдання.

Note 11. to be plus the infinitive may correspond to the Ukrainian «судилося бути, зробити ...».

E.g. 1. It was the girl who was to become my mother. 2. The man who was to prove it was then a schoolboy of fifteen.

II. The imperative meaning: 1) order, 2) prohibition

In this meaning must has an equivalent to be which is used to make orders and prohibitions stricter.

Note 12. In the imperative meaning the form must is retained in indirect speech.

E.g. 1. He told me I mustn't cry. 2. He said I must come and see his new car.

31. Make the following orders and prohibitions stricter by using 'to be’ instead of 'must'.

Model: 1. You mustn't fight, children.

2. You are not to fight, children.

1. You must tell me all about it one of these days. 2. And mind you, you must wear it not just keep it in moth-balls the year round. 3. You mustn't interrupt Father, Dicky. 4. No, you can't. You must first eat your porridge. 5. You must not start spending like mad the moment you get to New York. 6. You must remember your promise to me. 7. And, of course, you must stop smoking. 8. You must not wear your best dress to school. 9. You must not talk with your mouth full. 10. You must stay here and wait.
