13. Make the following sentences more emotional by transforming them according to Pattern 8:

It astonishes me that you find pleasure in reading such stuff. 10. I wonder which of the children is writing these things on the blackboard.

14. Translate the following sentences. State in what meaning the modal verb 'can' is used. Name the pattern and give the Ukrainian equivalent.

Model: 1. Sorry, you can't bring your own food here.

(imperative, prohibition, не можна, Pattern 5)

2. Can it be so very expensive?

(suppositional, strong doubt, невже, Pattern 6)

15. Translate into English:

1. Під час контрольної роботи не можна користуватися словниками. 2. Невже сьогодні так холодно? 3. Не міг він зробити таку безглузду помилку. 4. Не міг він вам цього не пояснити. 5. Можете піти в кіно, якщо хочете. 6. Чому ви мене не запитали? Я міг би вам усе пояснити. 7. Не можна брати чужі речі без дозволу. 8. Ви не могли б показати мені це місце в підручнику? 9. Шкода, що я не вмію робити це так як ви. 10. Я не знав, що вона була у Києві цього літа. Я б неодмінно передав книжку їй. 11. Принесіть мені, будь ласка, склянку води. 12. Можна, ми візьмемо Джека також? 13. Невже вони запізнились на потяг? 14. Як вони могли запізнитись на потяг? 15. Хто міг розповісти йому про це? 16. Можна, я ще раз спробую? 17. Ні, Таню, на вулиці їсти морозиво не можна. 18. Ви не могли б передати їй цей журнал? 19. Можете користуватися словниками, якщо зустрінете незнайоме слово. 20. Не може бути, щоб вони цьому дійсно вірили.

The modal verb may has two tense forms of the indicative mood: the present tense may and the past tense might. The verb may has the following meanings:

I. The primary meaning: absence of obstacles to the action.

E.g. 1. One may still hear this expression used by older people. 2. On fine mornings one may see strips of fog down in the valley. It's a sign of good weather coming.

Note 7. At present can is used as well as may in the following pattern:
