Petersburg State Transport University it was founded in 1809.

The institute was founded thanks to the decree of Emperor Alexander I.

The first rector was Augustine de Betancourt. He invented a system of scaffolding and mechanisms for lifting the columns of the building, founded the Gosznak factory, built the first arched minimum wage, the road from Moscow to St. Petersburg.

The first lectures were given in French.

Obraztsov, Vladimir Nikolaevich, he designed railway stations and junctions, the interaction of railway services of various transport.

The oldest building of the university is the 9th building. It was designed by J. Quarenghi.
