The monograph “The Opera on the Plague” by Dr. Vladimir A. GorshkovCantacuzene considers the plague – the most dangerous bacterial infection having caused three devastating pandemics in the human history.
The author suggests to consider the subject of the study from different points: first, the bacterium as the prima in the opera (Italian: case) and its impact on history and culture; second, human fates - heroes and war criminals. The book contains numerous illustrations and clinical case descriptions; therefore, it is designed primarily for students of medical universities for profound study. It may be used as well by students of biological and veterinary universities, residents and post-graduate students, in professional training and advanced training programs for doctors and in training programs for specialists in working with pathogens of especially dangerous infections. In addition, the author presents the information in non-traditional scientific and literary way, demonstrating that medicine is both a science and an art with inherent grace and romance. The simplicity of presentation and gradual terminology complication allow a non-prepared reader to thoroughly study the subject significantly exceeding the university curriculum.
The book provides photographs reflecting the life of Kitasato Shibasaburo, a Japanese doctor and the co-discoverer of the plague pathogen; the data on traditional Tibetan medicine and unique archive documents published in the European medical literature for the first time. Brief information on the natural foci of the plague existing in the modern world is provided in the appendices.
The book is recommended as a textbook (manual) for university students by the decision of the Academic Council of the Federal Budget Institution of Science “State Research Center for Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology”
