PAST TENSES OF THE ENGLISH VERB

, to emphasize the completion of one or some past actions when the action/actions of the main clause and those/that of the time clause form a succession of actions. In some cases the idea of completion dominates over the idea of the order of actions and the Past Perfect serves to indicate the action/actions, which actually followed the action(s) expressed by the Past Indefinite;

The Past Perfect is used in negative sentences different from № 8, 12 in Ex. 11 p. 33, when the action is completely negated {See also The Answers. Exercise 11 pages 46-47).

The Past Perfect Continuous denotes:

1)an action which was in progress for some time before another past action, moment or situation and which continued into it;

2)an action as being in progress for some time before another past action which interrupted it or as preceding a certain past moment or situation;

3)a repeated or permanent action which was characteristic of a certain period of past time before another past situation arose.

In negative sentences the Past Perfect Continuous is found when the negation ows not refer to the action itself but to the circumstances attending the action. {See ««oThe Answers. Exercise 11 page 33).
