Bacterial motility is often reflected in the size and shape of the colonies they form on blood agar. Highly motile organisms, such as the one show in the picture above, are able to swarm over the entire agar surface due to the low concentration of agar (5%) in blood agar. Swarming can be seen as growth throughout the entire plate, often in waves. Example: Proteus mirabilis
