A.We usually think of pizza as a baked open pie made of flat bread and covered with tomato sauce, melted cheese and toppings such as sausage and olives. Today it has become a global phenomenon and is popular around the world. Although many people believe it originated in Italy, food historians believe that dishes similar to pizza were eaten in the Mediterranean by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians.

B.Although pizza has been eaten by Italians for hundreds if not thousands of years, Raffaele Esposito of Naples in 1889 opened the restaurant Pizzeria di Pietro where he baked pizza especially for the visit of King Umberto I and Queen Margherita that looked like the flag of Italy - red (tomato), white (mozzarella), green (basil). This is the origin of the classic pizza Margherita.

C.Pizza was originally introduced to the United States by Italian immigrants but has become an iconic staple of American fast food as much as hamburgers, hot dogs and fried chicken. It also differs in many ways from classic Italian pizza, having developed several regional kinds.

D.New York-style pizza is thin-crust, uses little sauce and is closest to the original Italian style since it was developed by Italian immigrants from Naples. Chicago-style, on the other hand, is baked in a deep dish pan and has very thick crust. It is also topped with a large amount of spiced tomato sauce. California-style differs the most, with nontraditional toppings such as chicken and fresh vegetables. There is also Hawaiian pizza which is usually topped with pineapple and ham.

E.Differences in pizza styles become even greater in other countries. Many countries, especially those that are non-European, modify pizza to suit regional tastes. In India, tandoori chicken is a popular topping. In Brazil, sweet desert pizzas topped with bananas and pineapples are popular. In Japan non-traditional toppings such as seaweed, crab legs and shrimp can be found. In addition, both Korea and Japan use ingredients such as corn, potatoes and mayonnaise considered to be American or European but not traditionally used.

6

Английский язык. 11 класс. Вариант 1

F.Pizza is often considered to be unhealthy. This is due to its association with junk food and fast food. However, pizza includes the four basic food groups necessary for good health, mainly protein (pepperoni, ham, or other meat toppings) vegetables (tomato sauce, vegetable toppings), grains (pizza dough), and dairy (cheese). Pizza can be made even healthier by using whole-wheat flour to make the dough, fresh vegetables, and low-fat meat toppings.

G.In the past, pizza was only available at pizzerias or baked at home. Beginning in the 1950s in the United States, some restaurants started delivering pizzas to homes as an extra service. This didn’t catch on until the late 1960s when delivery-only pizzerias with no sit-down service became very popular. Traditionally orders are taken over the telephone, but now more and more people place orders online.

American Political Parties and Interest Groups

A political party is a group that seeks to elect candidates to public office by supplying them with labels. These labels can also be described as a party identification, A __________________________.

The political parties of the United States are the oldest in the world; among democratic nations, they may also be the weakest. It is not their age B_______________________, however; when they were a hundred years old, they were still vigorous and played a dominant role in national politics.

Rather, they have declined in significance as a result of changes in the legal rules under C ________________________ and in the attitudes of the citizens whom they seek to organize.

All of this has occurred – and is still occurring – in a constitutional system D____________________________.

As parties have declined, the relative importance of organized interest groups – or lobbies – has probably risen. Interest groups have always been part of American political life: they existed before parties, and the Founding Fathers hoped that the constitutional machinery E __________________, as well as the federal republic’s size and diversity, would keep interest groups so divided among themselves that none would dominate.

The Great Escape

When the alarm went off, it was still pitch dark outside. Getting up in total darkness was the hardest part for Jeff, who wanted to go back to sleep and forget all about the camping trip he'd promised to go on with his Uncle Jake. It was Jake who had insisted on an early start for their hike up the mountain.

Jeff was a short and awkward boy with messy hair. He didn't get out much because he was addicted to computer games. His mom and dad didn't really know what to do with him because he was getting fatter and fatter as each day went by.

A new computer game called “The Elder Scrolls IV: Skyrim” had just come out. Jeff had been playing every second he could get. In fact, it was the only way Jake had been able to talk Jeff into coming on the camping trip. He had been visiting his brother and nephew and saw the boy sitting at the computer, drinking a can of Mountain Dew and working his way methodically through a can of Pringles.

“Whoa, look at those mountains! It's really amazing, the graphics games have these days!” Jake exclaimed.

“Yeah, this is the newest one in the series. It has a lot better graphics than the last one,” Jeff answered, eyes glued to the screen.

The game was in first person perspective and showed someone carrying a sword and trudging their way up a steep mountain trail. Snow was falling gently and the view of the valley below was breathtaking with trees powdered in snow stretching down to a frozen river below.

“Man, we didn't have anything like this when I was your age. This is really cool. What are you supposed to do?”

8

Английский язык. 11 класс. Вариант 1

“Anything you want, really. I just like exploring, finding caves and killing monsters. You can find some really awesome armor and weapons sometimes. Oh, and if you kill dragons, you get special powers.”

“Have you killed any yet?”

“No, not yet. I need a higher level for that. I jus t started playing a few days ago.” Then Jake had an idea. The boy needed to get away from the computer. This would be the perfect chance.

“Hey Jeff, how about going on a real adventure, up into the mountains – it'd be just like in your game. Well, no dragons or monsters, but we could still go exploring. What do you say?”

It took a long time to convince Jeff, but finally he gave in and agreed to go, and now here he was, in the dark, sleepy and trying to figure out whether or not to just go back to bed. Still feeling sleepy, he got ready and ran out to meet his uncle Jake who was pulling up in the driveway.

It took several hours to get up to the mountains. Finally, they got out, put on their backpacks and started up a narrow trail. It was great at first, but then Jeff discovered this was going to be really hard.

The sweat was pouring from his face despite the cold mountain air. He was starting to feel lightheaded after the first few hours and started imagining himself in the game he had been playing. Right when he was approaching the dragon, sword in hand, ready for the kill, he neglected to see the tangled tree root in the path until it was too late. He tripped over it and had a sickening feeling of falling and a blinding white sensation of pain in his left ankle as he fell upon it with all his weight.

It took them a long time to get back to the car. Jeff leaned on Jake and hopped the whole way back on his one good foot.

“This is the last time I'm taking you anywhere,” Ja ke complained. “Sorry, I was just thinking about the game,” Jeff a nswered sheepishly.

A15 By saying that Jeff’s parents did not know what to do with their son, the narrator refers to the fact that Jeff

1) never went out.

2.) was very awkward.

3.) never combed his hair.

4) was a computer game addict.

A16 Uncle Jake invited Jeff to go hiking in the mountains because

1) he wanted to compare the graphics of the computer game to real nature. 2.) he cared about the boy’s health.

3) this was the purpose of his visit in the first place. 4.) he wanted to share a secret with Jeff.

9

Английский язык. 11 класс. Вариант 1

A17 Uncle Jake honestly admired Jeff’s computer game because

1.) the graphics looked very realistic.

2.) in the game one could kill monsters and dragons.

3) the game was very challenging and had several levels. 4.) he liked exploring caves and mountains.

A18 Which of the following was NOT what you could do in the game?

1.) race a car

2)kill dragons

3)find armor

4.) get special powers

A19 The only way to convince Jeff to go hiking was

1.) to promise that he would be able to play his game afterwards for the rest of the day. 2.) to explain how unhealthy it was to sit at the computer all day eating Pringles.

3) to say that hiking in the mountains would be somewhat similar to his game.

4.) to make him understand that this would solve all the problems with his parents.

A20

The sweat was pouring from Jeff's face because

1)it was hot.

2)he was out of shape.

3)he was scared.

4)he was sick.

A21

While hiking, Jeff started imagining himself in the game because

1)the mountain they were climbing looked exactly like the one in the game.

2)he was physically exhausted and couldn't think properly.

3)he wanted to make his uncle happy.

4)he took a toy sword with him and wanted to use it.
