Unit V. Interview producing

Ex. 1. Read the story

Future Prospects

From Earnest’s point of view, the interview was going very well indeed. Six days before, he had applied for a job with a small business company and now one of the directors was interviewing him. The advertisement had invited applications from ambitious young men who would like to travel abroad if necessary and who would not mind working irregular hours. Ernest had tried very hard not to say anything silly and the director seemed most impressed.

«You say you’re not married, Mr. Reeves», the direct said.

«No, sir», Ernest answered. «I’m getting married next June, but I’m sure my future wife won’t have any objection to my keeping irregular hours.

«I see from your application form you have worked as a salesman for two years. Why do you wish to change your job now»?

«I found the work too dull, sir», Ernest answered. ‘That’s a pleasant change, the director said. «Most young men these days seem to want dull jobs. The firm question young men ask me is whether the job I’m offering carries a pension. They want to retire before they start»! «Does the job carry a pension, sir» Ernest asked anxiously. (After J.G. Alexander).

b) Work in pairs. Ask Ernest questions:

if the interview went well; whether it is a large company; how he learnt about the job; whether Ernest is ambitious; whether he will like to travel abroad; if he will have to work irregular hours; if he was careful not to say anything silly; why the director seemed to be impressed; whether he is married; whether his wife will object to his keeping irregular hours; what his previous job was; why he wished to change his job; how long he had worked as a salesman; if the job carries a pension.

c) Reproduce the interview between Ernest and the company director. How do you think the interview was concluded? Can a prospective employer learn very much from an interview?

Ex.2. Job interview. Work in groups of about six (three interviewers and three applicants).

  1. Applicants write letters of application for one of the job advertised; interviewers prepare interviews.

  2. Applicants are interviewed in turn.

  3. Interviewers choose the best applicant and write letters to all three.

Use the following information:

Where do you work? How long have you been there? Why do you want to change your job? Where did you go to school? Have you any experience of selling? Can you speak any foreign languages? Have you ever lived abroad? Have you ever been dismissed from a job? What are your interests? Are you married? What’s the salary? What are the hours? Is there a canteen? etc.

Unit VI.applying- for- a- job pattern

Ex.1. a) Work in small groups. You are the manager of a company that is having difficulties with low motivation among its workforce. It’s your job to tackle the problem.

Start by pooling your ideas in a brainstorming session. Think of different things that motivate people to work harder. Brainstorm as many different motivators as you can. For example,

-higher pay

-working in teams

-opportunities for promotion

One person in the group should write a list. Help them by expressing your ideas in short phrases.

b) Look at your list and select the most important motivators to add the chart below. Then, working individually, rank them. Give 1 to the most effective, 2 – to the second most effective, and so on. (Don’t worry about the practicalities of introducing them at this stage. Just consider how effective you think they are.)

__________________________________________________________

Your Team

ranking ranking

Higher pay

Working in teams

Opportunities for promotion

c) Now share your opinions with your group and work out a team ranking

d) Some of these motivators will be easier to introduce into the work place than others; and some will be more expensive to introduce than other. For each one, discuss what problems you are likely to encounter and decide on the best way of overcoming them.

Ex.2. Read and discuss.
