Examples of non-finite verb phrases:

Infinitive:

  • To drive on a slippery road is dangerous.

  • To calm my mind, I needed a sound sleep.

  • To wait seemed foolish.

  • To watch monkeys can sometimes be funny.

Present participle (- ing):

  • Being amused, I clapped hard in the theatre.

  • Using deductive reasoning, Larry voted for the best candidate.

  • Hearing about the new assignment, the students groaned.

  • Considering how late it is, we ought to go home.

Past participle /–ed:

  • His head lowered, he walked home.

  • Her brain lost in thought, Jeri failed to hear the dog bark.

  • When inflamed, the skin hurts.

Gerund:

  • Walking is a habit you should develop from the beginning.

  • Running like a maniac will not solve any problem.

  • Sleeping in the afternoon is not healthy at all.

  • By writing, one learns to write.
