Medical Education in Russia

Any citizen of our country who has a complete secondary education may enter a medical university. Before admission to the university the young people have to take entrance competitive examinations in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Russian language.

The medical course is divided into the pre-clinical course, the clinical course and clinical internship. The pre-clinical course lasts two years. Each academic year begins in September and is divided into 2 terms. During their pre-clinical course students attend lectures, seminars and tutorials on the basic medical sciences such as Anatomy, Histology, Physiology and Biochemistry. They also have practical classes in these subjects. In addition, their curriculum includes Biology, Chemistry, Physics and foreign languages. All these subjects are compulsory for the students. At the end of each term the students have to pass examinations.

The clinical course takes four years. The students are trained in clinical subjects such as Medicine, Surgery, Pathology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Psychiatry, Neurology, Pediatrics, etc. In addition, they also attend courses in diagnostics, therapy and prophylactics. Apart from their theoretical education they have the opportunity to take case histories and to perform physical examinations. They assist doctors in clinics, hospitals and out-patient departments.

At the end of the sixth year students pass the final state examinations and receive their diploma. Then they have two years of clinical internship. Clinical interns work in clinics and large hospitals. If a young specialist wants to obtain a medical degree he may continue his studies developing his skill and knowledge under the supervision of experienced specialists.
