Understanding the future market for CO2-derived products and services
Which factors influence the future market?
The future market for CO2-derived products and services is challenging to assess, reflecting the early stage of technology development for many applications and the need for supporting policy frameworks. The IEA has identified three interrelated factors that will be key to determining future markets for CO2-derived products and services: scalability, competitiveness and climate benefit (Figure 16).
Strictly speaking, scalability and competitiveness alone are sufficient for the creation of a market. However, for almost all CO2 use applications the potential to contribute to emissions reductions will be central to their future deployment.
