Scene 1

Jake: Detective, I’m so glad you’re here.

Detective: This better be quick. I flying to Greenland to stop an international drug deal after I finish here.

Jake: Something terrible happened (happen) yesterday at 2:39 PM. My paperclip

Was taken (take).

Detective: What?! Your paperclip? I cannot believe that you called me for a paperclip that was taken yesterday! You should have called (call) me immediately after this happened. I

Going to cancel (cancel) my Greenland trip.

Jake: Yes, good idea. In fact, terrible things have been happening (happen)here all week.

Detective: Ok. You will need (need) to explain this to me in just a few minutes, but first right now I’m checking (check) my Instagram. My friend Jake always post (post) terrible pictures.

Jake: That’s alright. You know where to find me. I’ll be sitting (sit) at my desk when you finish.

Scene 2 -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Detective: Ok, tell me exactly what happened.

Jake: I put (put) a paperclip on my desk at exactly 2:35. Then, I had to leave to take a phone call. By the time I got (get) back, someone had taken (take) my paperclip.

Detective: I don’t know why someone would do such a thing.

Jake: All week long someone has been taking (take) from the office. There has been an extreme shortage, so recently loose papers have been flying (fly) around like crazy. You must

Find out (find out) who has been doing this. Detective: You can count on me.

Scene 3 -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Detective: This was found at the crime scene. The thief must have been (be) a woman who wears jewelry.

Jake: And she must have been (be) a woman with small hands. I guess it

Could have been (be) a child, but probably not because kids never use (use) paper clips.

Detective: That’s true.

Scene 4 -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Detective: Ok. I have a few questions that I need to ask you about the moment the crime occurred.

What were you doing (do) yesterday at exactly 2:39PM?

Suspect 1: I was sitting outside and I was eating (eat) at 2:39.

Detective: And you were eating your food?

Suspect 1: Well, not exactly. You see, right before 2:39, I had found (find) some free food on the table, so I was eating it.

Detective: Hmm. I see. Then it couldn’t have been you. You couldn’t have taken (not, take) the paperclip. It’s just not possible.

Suspect 1: That’s right.

Scene 5 -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Detective: What are you doing?

Suspect 2: I’m not doing (not, do) anything!

Detective: I’ve been looking (look) for you for a long time.

Suspect 2: But why?! I haven’t done (not, do) anything wrong…yet. Detective: Ok…what’s in your hand?

Suspect 2: What are you talking about? My hand was cut off (cut off) years ago in a scissors accident!

Detective: By the time I finish (finish) this case, the Greenland drug deal would have started(start) and ended (end) already.

Scene 6 -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Jake: What are you doing?

Detective: I am looking (look) for a woman with two hands. Jake: Well, that lady has two hands.

Detective: What?! Where?

Jake: I know she has two hands because she always wears (wear) gloves…two of them! Detective: Let’s go!

Scene 7 -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Detective: I need to ask you some questions, and I hope you have a good alibi. Where were you yesterday?

Suspect 3: I was in…um…I was in Papertown. You’ve never heard (never, hear) of it. It’s in another country. It’s near…um…Pinkland.

Detective: Pinkland? Papertown? Ok, well then show me the stamp in your passport.

Suspect 3: I don’t have (not, have) a passport. I mean, I (not, have) a passport yesterday. What I mean is, I’ve never owned(never, own) a passport in my life!

Detective: Ok, ma’am, you’re making your situation worse by the minute. I can see that you have two hands! Now tell me about the jewelry that you usually wear(wear).

Suspect 3: I usually just wear rings.

Detective: Ok. You usually wear rings, but you are not wearing (not, wear) any rings today. Suspect 3: So? I have plenty of other fashionable jewelry—like my necklace, but you could

Not have seen (not, see) it because it’s been under my shirt. Detective: Why don’t you want me to see your necklace?

Suspect 3: What? No! Yesterday, at 2:39 I right before the incident, I had been skiing (ski) for two hours.

Detective: Impossible! You couldn’t have been skiing. It’s way too hot for snow. Now show me your necklace.

Suspect 3: Never!

Detective: What! Where did you get this? Suspect 3: I got it in um…Greenland.
