Although the American economy has undergone radical changes over a long period of development, some of its notable features date back to the first days of the republic's existence. One such feature is the ongoing debate over the role of government in a predominantly market economy. The economy, which has developed on the basis of free enterprise, is characterized by private property and initiative, to which the government has no direct interest. However, from time to time the government has to intervene to protect the economic rights of citizens, prevent abuse, curb inflation and stimulate development.

The second notable feature of the US economy is its systematic transformation under the pressure of new technologies. The former nation of farmers has changed radically due to the successful introduction of machinery and production processes during the "industrial revolution".

The third notable feature is the ongoing debate over US policy on international trade and the level of United States integration into the world economy. Trade was the cornerstone of the colonial system: the export of American goods paved the way for the import of capital and machinery to further expand the economy. But the US government has always supported the protectionist measures needed by statesman Alexander Hamilton immediately after the American Revolution.

These factors reveal some significant features of the American economy. First, it is constantly changing through the activities of communities that freely express their economic views both directly, in the marketplace, and indirectly by voting in elections. At the same time, the long-term stability of the characteristic features testifies to the historical continuity and integrity of the US economy.
