Wal-Mart and Trust-Mart Response to Central China Earthquakes FACT SHEET

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., has pledged more than RMB 20 million (approximately US$3 million) for relief and reconstruction in the wake of the recent earthquakes that have rocked central China. In addition, the company is looking to establish a permanent charitable foundation in China as a means to support long-term reconstruction.

Wal-Mart China contributed RMB 5 million of the total donation to the Mianyang Red Cross and the China Poverty Alleviation Organization to fund the construction of 50 medical clinics in areas affected by the May 12 Wenchuan earthquake.

Our associates, customers and suppliers also are working together to raise funds. These contributions currently exceed RMB 4 million, with additional donations being made daily.

Wal-Mart's three operating units in China, Trust-Mart, Wal-Mart China and Global Procurement are assisting with supply chain logistics to help locate and deliver goods. By utilizing the Trust-Mart Chengdu and Wal-Mart Shenzhen distribution centers as staging areas, we have been shipping supplies quickly and in a well-coordinated manner to the region. Global Procurement has activated Wal-Mart's global supply chain network to locate goods in short supply in the country.

So far, some 30 truck loads of supplies have been delivered to the four cities of Deyang, Mianzhu, Shifang and Guangyuan. Supplies include water, food, tents, sleeping bags, blankets, batteries, flashlights, gloves, facial masks, shovels and other items in short supply. We have coordinated our efforts with the local governments, relief organizations and civil affairs authorities.

Immediately after the quakes, we provided earthquake victims with food, water and other supplies from our stores in the earthquake zone and set up relief operations outside our stores.

82

Up to 15 stores were initially closed. Our associates worked round-the-clock to get our stores back up and running. As of May 26, only one Trust-Mart store in Dujiangyan is closed due to structural damage. We know it means much to the communities we serve that we have the necessities they are looking for at our everyday low prices.

We are taking care of our associates. 5,500 Trust-Mart and Wal-Mart associates live and work in the region. We have now located all associates, but more than 550 have either lost their homes or their houses are severely damaged. Several also have lost loved ones. We are giving them extra financial support, access to counseling, and other assistance.

Partnering with more than 200 suppliers and the local Red Cross, we held a nationwide charity sale with all proceeds going directly to earthquake victims. With the China Red Cross and China Charity Fund we are collecting donations from customers.

Wal-Mart associates in the U.S., Japan, Brazil and Canada as well as our colleagues in India and at Bharti Retail are raising funds to support fellow associates and their communities.

Trust-Mart and Wal-Mart have some 40 stores, offices and warehouses in the region. Trust-Mart has the larger presence with 10 stores and a distribution center in Chengdu, while Wal-Mart has two stores there. Trust-Mart has one store in Dujiangyan. They each have one store in Mianyang.

At Wal-Mart, helping communities is what we do every day. And when a crisis strikes this becomes an even greater priority.

Dear editor,

I am submitting the enclosed opinion editorial regarding the harmful use of animals in education on behalf of Dr. Jonatnan Baircombe, a biologist and associate director for education on Annual Research Issues for the Humane Society of the

United States (HSUS). The HSUS is the nation’s largest animal protection organization.

We are certain that this editorial will interest many of your readers. It is intended to spark debate on your campus about the use of animals in science education. The issue of animal use in education is a growing concern among American college students. Scores of animal rights groups have sprung up on campuses during the past decade and the HSUS receives dozens of calls each month from college students seeking humane alternatives to classroom dissection or vivisection assignments.

If you prefer an electronic version of the piece I can send it to you on disk or e- mail it to your newsroom. In addition, you can find more information about dissection in the classroom on our World Wide Web site at www.hsus.org. Please, do not hesitate to call me if you have any questions. Thank you in advance for considering “Students Refuse Animal Dissection”.

Sincerely,

Public Affairs Director

Anytown Newspaper

Anytown, USA 12345

Dear Ms. Friendly,

What do dropping off the kids, running by the bank, and picking up dinner have to do with cleaner air? Trip chaining – combining errands into one, sensible trip – is just one of the many actions you can take to help improve air quality.

“We are together” is concerned about the environment and the quality of life in our city that is why we participate in It All Adds Up to Cleaner Air, a national education and partnership – building program sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration. The initiative focuses on a variety of individual actions that help improve traffic congestion and air quality. These steps are easy to take and fit into busy schedules without major inconveniences.

We need your help to launch It All Adds Up to Cleaner Air in our community area.

The program kick off coincides with “Clean Air Month” (May), which is the beginning of the summer ozone season.

It is critically important to let the public know that they can make a difference, and that changes do not need to be drastic to have an effect. In fact, many people are already taking actions that help to reduce pollution and traffic congestion (carpooling, for example, or combing errands into one sensible trip).

The enclosed PSAs celebrate current efforts and build awareness of the connection between travel behavior and air quality. Extensive research has guided the tone and manner of the ads. “It All Adds Up to Cleaner Air”, the tagline of the PSAs, reinforces the message that we can all be part of the solution.

We urge you to air these PSAs so that the residents of our community learn about the issues and how they can make a difference. I would appreciate a chance to discuss this initiative with you, and will call you next week to set up a time that is convenient for you.

Sincerely,

Genetically Modified Foods

According to the World Health Organization, Genetically Modified Organisms

(GMOs) are “organisms in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in such a way that does not occur naturally.” This technology is also referred to as “generic engineering”, “biotechnology” or “recombinant DNA technology” and consists of

90

randomly inserting genetic fragments of DNA from one organism to another, usually from a different species. For example, an artificial combination of genes that includes a gene to produce the pesticide Cry1Ab protein (commonly known as Bt toxin), originally found in Bacillus thuringiensis, is inserted in to the DNA of corn randomly. Both the location of the transferred gene sequence in the corn DNA and the consequences of the insertion differ with each insertion. The plant cells that have taken up the inserted gene are then grown in a lab using tissue culture and/or nutrient medium that allows them to develop into plants that are used to grow GM food crops.

Safety assessment of GM foods has been based on the idea of “substantial equivalence” such that if a new food is found to be substantially equivalent in composition and nutritional characteristics to an existing food, it can be regarded as safe as the conventional food. However, several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food consumption including infertility, immune dysregulation, accelerated aging, dysregulation of genes associated with cholesterol synthesis, insulin regulation, cell signaling, and protein formation, and changes in the liver, kidney, spleen and gastrointestinal system. The strength of association and consistency between GM foods and disease is confirmed in several animal studies. Animal studies also show altered structure and function of the liver, including altered lipid and carbohydrate metabolism as well as cellular changes that could lead to accelerated aging.

In spite of this risk, the biotechnology industry claims that GM foods can feed the world through production of higher crop yields. However, a recent report by the Union of Concerned Scientists reviewed 12 academic studies and indicates otherwise: “The several thousand field trials over the last 20 years for genes aimed at increasing operational or intrinsic yield (of crops) indicate a significant undertaking. Yet none of these field trials have resulted in increased yield in commercialized major food/feed corps, with the exception of Bt corn. However, it was further stated that this increase is largely due to traditional breeding improvements.

With the precautionary principle in mind, because GM foods have not been properly tested for human consumption, and because there is ample evidence of probable harm, the AAEM asks:

-Physicians to educate their patients, the medical community, and the public to
