Leg: A segment or part of a journey. A passenger going from New York to Paris to Rome to Athens with stops at Paris and Rome would be making a trip with three legs: New York, Paris-Rome, and Rome-Athens.

High Season/Low Season: Terms used for fare calculations on some airlines. High season is the period of heavy travel and higher fares. Low season is the period of light travel and lower fares.

21-Day and 45-Day Excursions: Another basis for calculating airline fares. The number of days refers to the length of the passenger’s stay at his destination; the longer the stay, the lower the fare.

Family Plan: Another basis for calculating fares on some airlines. Members of the family traveling with the head of the family get reduced prices.

Computer Referral System: Hotels, often independently owned, sometimes join together in a computerized system for making reservations.

Commission: A percentage of the price of a sale that is paid to the seller. Travel agents work on a commission basis for most of their business.

The Retail Travel Agent

Retail travel services are similar to clothing stores, except that they sell intangible services rather than tangible goods. Nevertheless, agency offices are often found in the same shopping areas as expensive stores, like the airline and travel offices along the streets like Fifth Avenue in New York or the ChampsElysées in Paris. The retail travel agents sell all kinds of tourist products – transportation, accommodations, sightseeing, and so on – to the general public.

The term retail distinguishes him from the tour operator or packager, who can be considered the manufacturer or wholesaler of the tourist industry. Nowadays the growth of the airlines led to a corresponding growth in the number

of retail travel agents. The airlines offer inducements to travel agents to handle reservations for them so that the airlines do not have to set up elaborate network ticket offices in all the market areas from which they draw passengers. Most airlines have sales and ticket offices only in those cities which they serve with actual flights.

Even where the airlines do have ticket offices, many travelers still prefer to use the services of an agent. The agent of course offers the customer one-stop convenience. The traveler can make all the arrangements for his trip without having to go to separate
