History of passenger train operations in Russia

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.

Can I have your attention, please? My name is Marina. I am a first year students of Siberian Transport University in the direction of railway operation at the Faculty of Railway Operation Management. The subject of my report is history of passenger train operations in Russia. So, we'll start.

The report will take about 3 minutes. We’ll try to answer all of your questions after the performance.

I want to tell you about the beginning of passenger transportation in Russia.

The history of public railways in Russia begins in the 1830s. In 1834, at the invitation of the mining department, the Austrian engineer Franz von Gerstner arrived in Russia, who made a proposal to Emperor Nicholas I to build a railway line. In 1836, the emperor promulgated a decree on the construction of the Tsarskoye Selo railway. Within a few months, a launch site was built from Bolshoy Kuzmin to Pavlovsk.

The official grand opening of the first public railway in Russia: St. Petersburg - Tsarskoe Selo took place on October 30, 1837. Gerstner himself became the driver of the first train, which consisted of the Provorny steam locomotive and eight cars.

Members of the Board of the road invited Emperor Nicholas I and other guests of honor to the opening. The passengers took their seats, and at 2:30 pm the train smoothly departed from the platform. After 35 minutes, to loud applause from the greeters and shouts of "Hurray!" the first train arrived at Tsarskoe Selo station.

We learned that passenger train traffic began in the 19th century. The first passenger road was opened in 1837.

Thank you for your attention. Feel free to ask questions.
