UNIT .5

LIEUTENANT SCHMIDT BRIDGE

I.Read the text and get the information about the bridge

St. Petersburg is possibly one of the unique cities in the world that every night is split in two parts (from the beginning of May till the middle of November – navigation period). It is because there are 13 bridges that cross the river Neva and at night they open for at least four hours to let large ships pass.

In 1727 a temporary bridge was built at the location of the modern bridge. The place was chosen by Menshikov whose palace is located at the opposite bank. This bridge, named Issakievsky (fig.17) existed until the current bridge was built, at which time it was moved to the location of where Palace Bridge is located today.

The very first constant bridge across the Neva River and the first bridge on the way from the Gulf of Finland to the center of Saint Petersburg, the Blagoveshinsky Bridge was opened on 12th of November in 1850. It was named after the Blagoveshenskaya Church on the left bridge of Neva, but in 5 years, after the death of Russian Emperor Nicholas I, the bridge was re-named to Nikolaevsky Bridge. In1918 the bridge got its third name after Lieutenant Peter Schmidt - a Russian officer and

a hero of the 1905 revolution, who organized uprising of the Black Sea Fleet and was executed by the tsarist government.

IV.Read the text about Stanislav Kierbedz and make your own plan in the form of questions for text retelling.

The Blagoveshinsky Bridge was built in 1843-1850. It was designed by Stanisław Kierbedź, a Polish engineer working in Russia . The architect Alexander Brullov participated in the decoration.

The construction was a cast iron bridge with a bascule section. At the time, it was the longest bridge in Europe. According to the legend, the Russian Tzar, Nicholas I promised to Kierbedź to give him a promotion for every completed flight. After the bridge

was completed with eight flights total in it, Kierbedź was promoted to the rank of General, but actually when he started the construction he already had a rank of Podpolkovnik (i.e. lieutenant colonel). In 2006 the total reconstruction of the bridge began with the building of new, temporary bridge close to the existed one (fig.19).

Inhabitants of St.Petersburg immediately called this temporary bridge "Lieutenant Schmidt's Son". Playing an important role as the gate to the city for sea-going vessels, this 24 meters wide and 301 meters long bridge offers wonderful panoramic views to the Admiralty and University Embankment.

VI. Put the verbs in brackets into the proper grammar form in Passive or Active voices.
