Test 9( Intermediate level)
I. Reading. Read and compare the two compositions written by two students on the topic
« My First Day at School». Then do the exercises.
Composition 1,
My First Day at School
I don't like going to school. I prefer reading books and playing computer games at home. I'm fond of reading detectives. My favourite author is Agatha Christie who is a master of detectives. Her stories are very exciting and keep the reader in suspense.
Two days ago I visited the theatre and saw a play by Agatha Christie . It was called The Mousetrap. I enjoyed it greatly. The actors played very well and no-one in the audience guessed who was really the murderer. Since that time I've become a theatre- goer.
Composition 2.
My First Day at School
My first day at secondary school was dreadful. I was new in the class and didn't know other children. Nobody spoke to me.
The first lesson was French. All the children spoke and read in French , but I could not understand the teacher. The teacher gave us a lot of homework. We never had homework in my old school. That day was the longest day in my life.
But the next day school was right because I met a boy who lived in the same street as I lived. So we decided to go to school together and I had a new friend.
Exercise1. Answer the questions.
1) The first student won't get a good mark for his composition 1. Why?
2) If you were asked to write an essay about your first days at school, what points would you mention?

Can you.........( 6- do / make) notes, quickly, and can you understand them afterwards? For some reason, many schools give learners no help with these matters. Teachers ask students to............( 7- memorise / forget) pages from books, or tell them to write ten pages, but don't explain............( 8- how/ what) to do it. Learning by .........( 9- law / heart) can be useful, but it is more important to have a genuine understanding of a subject.
