MAGNITOGORSK

1. Magnitogorsk, a city in the Chelyabinsk Region, was founded near very rich iron ore deposits in 1929. The Ural River divides the city into two parts. One part of the city is in Asia, and the other is in Europe. In 1931 Magnitogorsk got city status. This was the time when the Russian people created a coal and metallurgical centre in the east of our country.

2. The Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Works is one of the largest and best equipped enterprises of this kind in our country. The first blast-furnace was put into operation on January 31, 1932. It was the biggest of its kind not only in Russia, but in Western Europe as well. Metal output increased due to the use of new achievements of science and technology.

3. In the years of its operation the Works supplied hundreds of million tons of pig iron, steel and rolled stock. The production effectiveness at the Works is rather high. The Magnitogorsk Works is a school for foremost work methods, a training centre of qualified metal-workers. Thousands of people at the Works are graduates of higher technical schools. At these schools they combined work and study.

4. Magnitogorsk workers have comfortable homes, enjoy the services of nursery-schools, hospitals. They are also proud of their library. There are 500,000 volumes at the library. Besides the library of the metal-workers, the city has another 157 libraries which have a total of over four million volumes. The libraries have a standard readership of 284,000. m

5. Magnitogorsk is not only a well-known industrial giant, but a well-planned modern city, one of the most important cultural centres in the Southern Urals. The city has many secondary specialized and vocational schools and schools of higher learning. One out of every 20 residents in the city is a higher school student.
