  1. Look at the picture of the first industrial robot and answer the questions

How many joints does the robotic arm have?

Where is the shoulder joint/ the elbow joint/ the wrist joint?

Speak on the structure of the robotic arm, step motors, motion sensors.

  1. Watch the video and choose the correct option

  1. George Deval thought that robots are preferable to people in jobs that

a. involve repetitive actions

b. require a lot of concentration

c. require high accuracy

  1. The original purpose of the robot arm by George Devol was …

a. to improve the workers’ life

b. to make production cheaper

c. to improve production quality

  1. It was difficult for the robots to be introduced to the US industry because …

a. the industry was not ready

b. the public thought that they were dangerous

c. the industry could not afford them

  1. Industrial robots became popular in Japan because

a. the public there found them cute

b. they increased productivity

c. they improved the companies’ image

  1. *Match the characteristic to the personality

George Devol

had poor business skills

Joe Engelberger

had a research degree

immediately recognized the commercial potential of the invention

tried to find the market for the new invention

was a nerd

was a self-taught engineer

was a serial inventor

was a sharp businessman

was the father of the first industrial robot

  1. Study the slide below, in pairs or small groups answer the questions

    1. What are the most frequent jobs robots do in industry?

(to drill holes, to tighten bolts, to fill containers, to twist caps onto peanut butter jars, …..)

    1. What end effectors would these jobs need? (use the prompts in the right-hand slide)

    2. What end effector can you see in the picture?

    3. Speak on how a pressure sensor works through the example of a gripper.

How Are Robots Used in a Factory?

Robots in factories are used to:

  • lift heavy items

  • assemble parts together

  • join parts together using glue or by welding

  • paint things

glue – клей

welding – сварка

The robot's end effector depends upon the job that the robot has to do. It could be:

  • a gripper (like a hand, for picking things up)

  • suction pads (for lifting sheet metal or glass)

  • a paint spray gun (for painting things)

  • a welding gun (for joining metal parts together)

suction pad – присоски

welding gun – сварочный пистолет
