VII. Choose the correct item.

It was a cold winter's night. The wind was howling outside and Moira was happy to be in her warm living room. A big log fire was (1) ……. in the fireplace. She took a sip of coffee and started reading the letters she had received that morning. One of them was from John Clare, an old schoolfriend who she had not heard from for years! IX. Fill in each gap with only one word.
