The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles to the northwest of Europe. The Atlantic Ocean and two seas - the Irish Sea and the North Sea - wash the Isles. The English Channel separates them from France.
The Kingdom consists of four parts: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. England, Wales and Scotland occupy the territory of Great Britain. Northern Ireland is situated in the northern part of Ireland. Each part has its floral emblem: the rose of England, the thistle of Scotland, the daffodil of Wales and the shamrock of Northern Ireland.
The territory of the Kingdom is about 244,000 square kilometres. The population is over 56 million. The English are descended from the Roman, Saxon and Viking invaders. The native population of the country (the Celts) lives in Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
