Shopping Around Stratosphere
Some marketing and media experts hate all the talk about possible electronic shopping. Yet progress is being made in unexpected ways.
For example, British Airways (BA) passengers relaxing at 36,000 ft will soon be able to buy items from top stores. And then the purchase will be delivered to their destinations or homes.
BA is to hold trials of a new multi-channel entertainment system which will include video shopping.
Travelers watching a screen in the seat-back or arm-rest will be able to order and to pay for goods simply by swiping cash or credit cards through a handset.
BA’s “Shop the World” cannel will feature goods from top London stores, including food hampers and silk underwear from Harrods, shawls and scarves from Liberty, clothes from Aquascutum, leather goods form Mulberry, jewellery from Links of London – as well as Tibetan carpets, Irish linen, South American crockery and toys.
BA hopes to offer the service in 14 languages throughout its fleet.

Winner to be Named Soon
Ferry companies, fierce competitors of rail services through the Channel tunnel, are intensifying their battle to dominate the market for travel between Britain and France.
A family of four can now take a car from an English port to France and back by ferry for less than £10 ($15.50).
The winning consortium bidding to build the £3 bn ($4.6 bn) rail link between London and the Channel tunnel to France will be named early next month. But the high-speed link is not expected to be finished before early 2003, six months later than previously planned.
The 110km line will run from a new station at St. Pancras in London to the Channel tunnel entrance and will cut 30 minutes from journey times to Paris and Brussels. At the moment Eurostar trains from London to Paris and Brussels use existing tracks in southeast England and do not reach full speed until they are in France.
Construction work is expected to be straightforward, say construction industry executives close to the project. But passenger numbers on Eurostar trains have been only a third of those originally forecast. Passenger numbers to Brussels have been particularly disappointing.
