The american flag

The American flag was adopted in June, 1776. There was one star and one stripe for every state in the new country. Gradually, as new states were added to the Union, new stars appeared on the national flag. Hawaii was the last star in 1959. On present-day American flag there are 50 stars, one for each state and 13 stripes, representing the original thirteen states. The red-white-blue flag of the USA is known as “Old Glory” or the “Stars and Stripes”. Red stands for courage, white for liberty and blue for justice.

The Americans love and honor their flag. You can see “Stars and Stripes” in streets and squares, shops, offices and institutions. In American schools the day begins with the solemn ceremony of raising the flag. The name of the national anthem of the USA is the “Star Spangled Banner”.
