Preface
“A Practical Course in Translation: Socio-Political Aspects” is a course for students studying translation and interpreting at advanced level of English as a university course or can be used for self-study as well. It is designed to serve as a basis for developing interpreting and translation skills.
The book presents a collection of exercises based on essential vocabulary which improve transtation skills and enlarge the student’s vocabulary. The work also embraces exercises on different grammatical aspects of translation. Modern texts on socio-political issues have been taken from respected foreing and local mass media sources.
My special thanks to the graduates of Linguistics and Translation Faculty (2016), who kindly agreed to assist in translation of texts from English into Ukrainian in the section “Texts for Lexical-Grammatical Analysis”.

Text 1. Us Secretary of State Arrives in Moscow for Syria Talks.
The US secretary of state, John Kerry, has arrived in in Moscow for a series of meetings to discuss how to end the Syrian civil war and sound out (выяснить) Russia’s latest position on the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad. Kerry began talks with his Russian counterpart, the foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, on Thursday morning, and is due to meet president Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin later in the day.
Text 2. Theresa May Arrives in Berlin for Talks with Angela Merkel.
Theresa May has been given a military welcome in Berlin as she arrived for talks with the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, on her first foreign trip as prime minister. Afterwards, the British and German leaders began bilateral talks where the major subject is expected to be the UK’s vote to leave the EU. After a press conference on Wednesday evening, they will have a working dinner.
Text 3. Kerry and Lavrov Arrive in Geneva for Talks on Syria.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Geneva ahead of talks on Friday to work through an agreement on fighting the so-called Islamic State group in Syria. The hope is that the meeting could lead to the relaunch of peace negotiations in the war-ravaged (спустошена війною) country.
Text 4. Joe Biden to Arrive in Sweden for Refugee Talks.
US Vice President Joe Biden will arrive in Stockholm on Wednesday evening ahead of talks with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven that are expected to focus on migration and refugees.

Міністр закордонних справ України Павло Клімкін прибув до Берліна для участі у переговорах голів зовнішньополітичних відомств країн "нормандської четвірки", де він зустрінеться з Сергієм Лавровим (РФ), Франком-Вальтером Штайнмайером (ФРН) та Лораном Фабіусом (Франція). Про це повідомив посол України в Німеччині Андрій Мельник у своєму Twitter. "Берлін зустрічає міністра Клімкіна: попереду відповідальні переговори в нормандському форматі", - написав Мельник.
Text 2. Порошенко прибув до Єлисейського палацу й розпочав переговори з Олландом.
Президент України Петро Порошенко прибув до Єлисейського палацу для проведення двосторонніх переговорів та участі в саміті лідерів країн «нормандської четвірки». Про це інформують ЗМІ. Відразу після прибуття Порошенка розпочалася його зустріч із президентом Франції Франсуа Олландом. Згідно з інформацією ЗМІ, до української делегації входять: міністр закордонних справ Павло Клімкін, заступник глави адміністрації президента Костянтин Єлісєєв, начальник Генерального штабу Збройних сил України Віктор Муженко, другий президент України, представник країни в Тристоронньої контактної групі Леонід Кучма, радник президента Руслан Демченко.
